How to make decent research notes?

I have two sources right now, both books and they're both about 200 pages long How can I make decent research notes without having to spend my time reading through those 400 pages? It's really a pain if I spend about 2-3 hours reading through it then having to take another few hours to pinpoint the important ideas.

I hope that you don't think you can successfully read 400 pages in 2-3 hours and then take notes on them. Any sane man does 1 page per hour. But seriously, talk to your teacher and ask him/her what the most important topics in the book are, and is there any stuff in it that you need'nt bother with. In many cases I end up buying a 200 page textbook, and half the stuff in it isn't required for the exams I'm taking. If you're studying it for Uni however, it may be a different story.

1 page an hour? What are you blowing? You can scan the text once over and read it, then write down/highlight parts that you need.

Table of contents and find the chapters that actually pertain to your research You can do that, or google the book's name with quotes ie: "(book name) quotes" And then use those quotes and develop on it. Or you can look at other research papers online/summaries of the books have fun bsing your paper :D

Look through the table of contents or the index to find specifically what you're looking for. Try to write at least a sentence or a point every few lines, or whatever you think you need.

Write down whatever is important/make your own notes. Highlighting something is stupid; it does absolutely nothing. I see kids highlighting, and they highlight the entire page...
