What do you think are bad parenting mistakes of this generation? I think the top two are Allowance and Grounding. Allowance is a stupid idea because you are giving your kids money they can use on anything, most of times leading to drugs. Doing their duities around the house should be a given. If you want your parents to buy you something, just ask for it, usually if your grades are good, you will get it. Grounding is also stupid because it doesn't teach them a lesson. Beating is much better, a kid won't change if their gameboy is taken, if they are beat, they will be scared and persuaded to do better. ^_^ Discuss.

Worst parenting mistake of this generation would be procreation in the first place. This world is not meant for the innocence of kids.

Allowance does not lead to drugs, it's the surroundings around them which lead them to buy drugs with that allowance. And beating really wouldn't work cause we have those child abuse laws. If my parents beat me, I'll beat them back up. :|

Allowance->Money->Drugs=Why I can't get anything fun anymore ( I never used) And I've never gotten grounded. I have to agree with what you said. They should get thier kids things instead of allowance.

lol I remember I was like 5 and my dad took his belt to me and then threw me in my car bed, and I hit my head on the edge and got a concussion @__@ Believe you me, I learned my lesson. Now when they took away my gameboy for a month? I was pissed at them and got even worse. Beatings > Groundings

By the times kids are really old enough to buy drugs, they should have a real job anyway, not living on allowance.. Allowance teaches responsibility and that when you do work, you get something from it. Groundings also do work. I have never once been hit in my life and I grew up fine. I would also NEVER hit my children. I don't think the kids are there to take out my frustrations on and I do not want to teach them that the way to make people listen is to hurt them and make them fear you.

My parents never did those, so meh. However, I think allowance is okay as long as it's smallish amounts, but don't ask me. The worst mistake I've seen is pressuring too much. This happen to me and most asian people I know.

I think its not hitting your kid cause they will more than likely be spoiled little brats and 2 is grounding em they are not going to learn from their mistakes

Kids these days need a good spanking. Not a, "Go get the switch so I can whoop that ass" type of spanking. Just a little force when they are itty bitty. A well timed and not oft used spanking will go a long way. Although, personally I did not get an allowance and neither will my kids. I don't believe in paying my children for things they should do anyways. I will offer money rewards for extraneous circumstances such as seasonal chores they wouldn't normally do. Otherwise? Clean your room, do the dishes, help clean the houses. You don't get a money incentive to not be filthy.
Travis : Not allowing teenagers to live their own life entirely. My parents have let me do whatever I want with my life and gave me absolutely no restrictions (okay I have minor ones but for example: I was 13 and I would go "mom I'm going to cali for the weekend be back in 3-4 days" she would say "heres money be safe love you" and let me go drive/fly there with friends. I feel I have learned a lot more than the average 18 year old because of this and have obtained knowledge that is really useful in my every day life. I believe that all teenagers deserve the freedom to do whatever they want, whether it's travel, go to school, not go to school, do drugs, party, drink, play video games, watch TV, eat junk food, lift weights, etc. I think once you are in HS (14+) you are capable of making your own decisions. If in other countries young minors can work hard labor and partake in the same activities adults do, so can we. We just need to allow our children to "spread their wings" and make their own decisions. I am only saying this because every person I know with parents who have rules that is less happy with their life than I am. I have been happy for the mass-majority of my life and especially right now my life is amazing. I feel that is the only major flaw with parenting, that they actually do it.
i agree with everything u said except allowing your kids to drink. thats a bit to loose.

I don't think the kids are there to take out my frustrations on and I do not want to teach them that the way to make people listen is to hurt them and make them fear you.
In many cases, parents just give out a weekly allowance with absolutely no work being done. The fact that my parents didn't give me an allowance made me appreciate money much more from a young age because when I did get money, I cherished it. Groundings, to me, is one of the most useless disciplinary tools which more often than not leads to more bad behavior. When parents restrict their kids from something they have the tendency to try and reclaim what was taken away from them, whether it be a physical item or their "freedom". Obviously that isn't always the case though, IE: your situation. I think you see "beatings" to harshly. I personally think it's a great thing now that I have matured past the age where my parents would do that to me. My parents whooped me, but I never thought "the way to make people listen is to hurt them and make them fear you". All I thought was "I don't like this. I'm going to stop doing bad things". As long as you make your kids understand why you are doing it, it is a very effective deterrent.
