So I have to do an essay about the great gatsby and I need help thinking of 3 subtopics to write about... The topic question is: What does the novel suggest about belonging? Who is an outsider? So far, I picked George Wilson for the outsider. I don't know what the novel suggests about belonging My topics are going to be: 1. ? <I need something about the novel suggesting about belonging 2. George is an outsider because he is poor compared to everyone else mentioned in the book 3. His lifestyle/looks is different compared to everyone else mentioned in the book can anyone help please?

Wasn't the narrator character guy the outsider? I think his name was Nick or something But I haven't read the book since 8th grade so I don't really remember too well

In a sense, Gatsby is more of an outsider than anyone else. Even though he through parties and stuff and fits in the rich neighborhood, he feels alone and feels more like he doesn't belong than anyone(Only reason he threw those parties was to get the attention of that one girl, who he couldn't be with anyways).

Why do you need to do it on George, he wasn't really much of an important character, besides killing Gatsby of course =/. I'm not understanding what u mean by "belonging" whether its like he belongs there or it has to do with people's belongings.

[/quote] I have to do it because everyone else is picking the other main characters and teacher doesnt wanna read over 40 essays os the same character and by belonging i mean like belonging with the rest of the characters (everyone is rich, slacks off all day, nice house, well dressed, etc.) while George is poor and dirty, works all day, so he doesn't fit in/belong with the characters nick hangs out with and describes in the book

XDanererI would say Nick was the outsider because he had everything paid for by his father for 1 month, so he didn't live there before, nor will the chances be that he will for more than a month Also that Nick was one of the main characters, but did nothing throughout the book besides introduce Daisy and Gatsby.

My class is just reading The Great Gatsby. For the question about belongings mention how the author conveys the negative sides of the rich. For this look at Gatsby; he is all about possessions and insatiability. Look at the descriptions of his house, how he cleans up Nick's house, and the elegant colors describing Gatsby. I have yet to finish the book actually but I am more than half-way through. Hope I helped! Edit: Oh, I think I miss understood your term, "belongings"
