172^2 + R^2=232^2 The big numbers are inditmedating me. Help? Thanks in advance. Please try to explain.

subtract 172^2 from 232 ^2 Take the square root of both sides. Cancel out pairs of two in the factors and put it on the outside And remember your +- when taking the square root too!

Why don't you just re-arrange it like it were a Pythagorean Theorem question? A^2 + B^2 = C^2 B^2 = A^2 + C^2 Then you do the math and square root it. o__o

I'm gonna teach you a little trick: (a+b)(a-b)=a^2-b^2 172^2 + R^2=232^2, R^2=(232^2 - 172^2), R^2=(232-172)(232+172), R^2=(60)(404), R^2=24240, now you can either use a calculator. If you don't want to use a calc, then 24240/2, 12120/2, 6060/2, 3030/2, 1515/3, 505/5, 101 24240=2^4x3x5x101 R^2=2^4x3x5x101, R = +/- 4(square root of 3x5x101) @@@@_______@@@@@@______ R= +8| 15x101 or R= -8|15x101 EDIT: Oh wow, ninja'd. I took a lot of time to do all the calculations.

Haha, you'll most likely be using a calculator by the time of higher mathematics. (Or the calculations are simpler) Unless you are doing mental math competitions / non-calc.
