are filipinos asian or pacific islander?

I believe they're asian. What do you guys think? It's a big debate in my town and a lot of the filipinos here believe we are pacific islanders but in fact we aren't. And no one has made any kind of valid argument to say that we are pacific islander.

Asian. Samoans are an example of Pacific Islanders, they are simply not comparable.

If you live in the continent of Europe, you are European. If you live in the continent of North America, you are North American. If you live in the continent of Asia, you are Asian. This includes Indians, Middle East Asians, and, of course, South East Asians. But, further, why can't Filipinos be classified by more than one title? If you are Mexican, for example, you are also Hispanic. Whites are called Caucasians, blacks are called African Americans or perhaps just Africans if not American. I'm not saying these are great analogies since they don't quite fit the situation you have, but many different kinds of people can, indeed, be classified under more than one category, and that is perfectly fine.

I consider us to be both, but since most people don't know what a pacific islander is anyways, i generally go with asian lol.

[/quote] This is fine. Filipinos are also called Pinoy. That's the equivalent of a black person being called african american or a white person caucasian. But filipinos calling themselves pacific islanders is politically incorrect and shows that they're ignorant about their own identity in my opinion. snailsinnerx Dude if this is true you have to prove it with factual evidence. And I'm filipino as well.

What I don't get is how some people think that Filipinos/Indians/Middle Easterners aren't Asian at all. If you live in Asia, you're Asian, just like if you live in South America, you're South American. Why would it be different? Secondly, some people seem to be under the impression that because most people think that Filipinos are not Asian , it must not be true. Well, I must express now that most people do not think that unless you live in some place where there are so few Asians to begin with that you're making up your own assumptions and impressions. Also, since the populations of these countries far outshadows the population of all the white people in America combined, I think I'd venture to say that most people do not, in fact, share that view. It's just people with limited perspectives and narrow experiences or who live in places with unvaried demographics who do.
