College + Highschool + ADHD?

Hey Basil :D Much love for you all. Anyway, I have just found out that I have ADHD in my senior year of highschool.. I always noticed that I could never focus on simplistic tasks and such but it never occurred to me that I may be suffering from ADD/ADHD. My mother seemingly remained ignorant of the fact and still does to this day. After years of acting like the class clown, constantly chatting & being distracted by the slightest movements such, zoning out, randomly blurting out irelavent statements... I plan to be tested (again) within the next few weeks.. I was wondering; Should this recent discovery be mentioned on future college applications? Like, should I go out and say "oh, I suffer from ADHD" or should I just keep it under the rug.. 9th & 10th grades were the worst years of my life when it came to academic success. I was ALWAYS on the move, always twitching, never focused in class regardless of how hard I tried.. It was nearly impossible. It still is remarkably difficult for me to just stay focused! Argh.. I wish I had found out sooner so that something may have been done. Anyway basil, thanks for listening :D I am also unaware of how the medicine that will be provided will affect me.. Sigh, so many problems.. (: Btw, for reference- I plan on applying to Adelphi Uni. New York Uni. Stony Brook Uni. Baruch, & a couple of others.. On the contrary, I would thinking having ADHD and persevering despite it would be something I would want to tell universities. They'd understand why you have a low GPA compared with your SAT.

I think you should tell them. It can be one of those hardships in life that you overcame (or are trying to overcome) seems like colleges are always looking for people like that. o_o

I agree with @above. Legally wise, they can't turn you down just because you have ADHD. You still have to meet the school's academic requirements though. However, I read that you might get a little leeway if you mention having ADHD in a positive spin, such as overcoming the setback, and turning it into success. :D

i am a senior with ADD but i learn to deal with it but my sats score may hurt me a lot Edit: wow i just read your post and im in the same situation however my gpa is 3.0 and sat is 1270 suck it up and live with it, if you really have adhd how did u score high in sats huh? i bombed that test because of my ADD.

Your GPA may seem really low, however, your SAT sort of makes up for it. Did you take SAT2 subject tests? Also, include that you have ADHD in your personal statement because it's basically telling them who you are and what you do.

i suffer with adhd also. i got tested in 5th grade(now a soph in college), and since then i have noticed i cant pay attention in class or even sit with out moving for over an hour. I just cant do it. i ended up going to a community college in southern California... i couldnt really do anything about it.. :[ i hope it helps

Medicine helps if you have adhd but they are very addictive so watch out.

As far as twitches, and irresistible movements go, I think you guys should see a neurologist. I have tourettes, and there are many studies on how the two disorders (ADHD and tics) are related, and are being, with studies, proven to be neurological disorders. I take Guanfacine for my tics (it is a neural depressant), and it is actually perscribed mostly for ADHD patients. From studies, it can really help ADHD patients focus, and be less inclined to get off track. I don't know what positions you guys have for medication, but consider this.

I have ADD and in 8th grade (Not confirmed, but I know for a fact I have it). Anytime I'm near something that might be even a little bit more entertaining than what I am doing, and I'll gravitate to it, I constantly talk and mess around in class, and sometimes end up staring at a wall for 10 minutes zoned out til the teacher says something. I can't really do much/any homework at one time without entirely spacing out... It sucks, but it ends up being a helluva lot more fun than spending all my time working and end up doing it the night before it's due / right before class. EDIT: As others have said, I'd mention how you have it and that it might be an explanation for lower grades, your SAT scores are really good, and that would explain the reason you only have a 3.0 GPA, but I wouldn't try to get (too much) pity in your essays.

Telling them is important. It may even give them more incentive to give you financial aid. I work at the financial office at my school and they really put that into consideration when they may be deciding to remove or add a scholarship. A girl who was dxed in sophomore year in high school contacted our office, gave us evidence of her dx, and thus the financial aid advisors did not revoke her reward when her GPA didn't meet her scholarship's requirement.
