ok...why does the term "asian" refer to east asian? i mean wtflolbbqsawce? this just makes no sense. i get middle east being called middle east, cause it includes africa. Russia is Eurasian. But south asian's are categorized as "indians" but when people talk about native american's, they get called "indians." the correct term for east asian would be sinosphere-ians or w/e you want to say. i'm just saying this is getting to be incredibly annoying since it isn't even technicalities, its just simple fact. ASIA IS ASIAN *high five anyone?* now why does people (or you...) call them "asians" instead of "east asians" or "orients" or "sinosphere-ians" P.S. in british english, asians refer to south asians

Same reason we refer to only the people that reside in the United States of America "American" and not the rest of N. and S. America. We've been doing it for generations.

Asians comprises everyone on the continent of Asia, including those in the Middle East and India and those from South East Asia. I don't understand people who say otherwise. But if you live in a place that's greatly Asian, ie Los Angeles, then my definition becomes clearer and clearer the longer you live there.

But I can guess Canadians and Mexicans, we call "North Americans" By your definition, we should also call Brazilians and Chileans "Americans" / Rather, we call them "South Americans" and rightfully so. =D But those who live in America, the nation, we can call Americans. Who knows. Anyways, back to my point, no matter how you argue it, by its definition, "Asians" = all people in Asia.

Well one could say its better if they call then asians (just like if your european its ok to call a United Statian an American since they are and like some East Asians call us westerns) than chineses. gobipage I didn't know there was a nation called america, I thought it was the new world (western hemisphere) that was called america.

United States of AMERICA. what would we call our selves? united statesians? if we didn't have the word America in our name, then we wouldn't call ourselves American.

[/quote] You didn't know there was a nation called America? What the heck, are you kidding me? Are you actually trying to argue that point? There are millions upon millions of instances of people substituting "America" for the "United States". If you say the word "America" to any person on this planet , he/she will immediately know that you are talking about the nation of the United States on the continent of North America. It may have once been different, but now , it is like this and this is what 99.9% of the people on Earth think. The majority wins.

If everyone living in Asia should be Asians, then everyone in N. and S. America should be American.
