| LONDON (Sept. 2) -- Entering the ongoing debate between faith and science, renowned British scientist Stephen Hawking claims that modern physics has now proved that God played no role in the creation of the universe. In a new book -- "The Grand Design," co-written with American physicist Leonard Mlodinow -- the theoretical physicist sets out to demolish Sir Isaac Newton's claim that an "intelligent and powerful Being" must have shaped the universe, which he believed could not have emerged from chaos. Hawking and Mlodinow rule out the possibility of divine intervention, saying that new theories have made the idea of a supernatural creator redundant. "Because there is a law such as gravity, the universe can and will create itself from nothing," the pair write, in an extract published in today's London Times. "Spontaneous creation is the reason there is something rather than nothing, why the universe exists, why we exist. It is not necessary to invoke God to light the blue touch paper and set the Universe going." For more information, here is the source Interesting. Anyone plan on getting Stephen Hawkings latest book? |

|
MaikuX3 : What's so interesting about it is that Stephen Hawking, then man that is said to have the highest IQ in the world, has said it. Especially when in his other book "A Brief History of Time" previously stated that a God might have played a role in the creation of the Universe. Now he says its completely redundant. @ CowWhiskers: This physicist and Harvard professor already reworked his theory and has been doing so ever since the 1980s. You really wanna tell this PhD holder that he is 100% wrong, even though he most definitely has alot more education and experience in the field of cosmology? Alrighty then.
Redundant is an interesting word, because it doesn't totally dismiss it. I'm assuming he still allows the possibility but prefers to believe in his new findings? |

| And it took the smartest guy in the world how long to come to this conclusion? And yet we have users in this very forum who feel like they could've reached such a similar conclusion before this guy. Oh, and as smart as Stephen Hawking may be, I can't help but feel deep down inside myself a certain discrimination towards him due to his disability. I feel that it discredits his knowledge and way of reasoning to some extent. I don't think he wrote the book to disprove God, but rather to discuss more of his scientific theories and it just so happens that God is one of the passing topics in the book. Anyway, I will not be buying the book. I don't really buy books unless they're Harry Potter. :P We have not reached the point in science where scientists can simply disprove God's existence due to theories. We would have to rewrite the rules on Logic. |

| Besides, their creation theory breaks nearly every law on thermodynamics and matter change. Hypocrisy much? deerC God created time. Don't understand it? Humans can't, because time is essentially all we know. |

|
deerC : where did god come from to create the universe? it had to be made from something
Oh you. Don't you know that God, by definition, is eternal? He is not contained within time, and therefore, does not necessitate a "beginning" or a creation. God is not created. He always was (according to our universe, at least). |
Oh yes, I will mean to clarify. He takes in consideration of a God possibly existing. The question is whether or not a God was responsible for and created the universe the way it is today, leaning towards the "it didn't" answer. He does not go around chanting "GOD DOES NOT EXIST", he is alot more intelligent and professional than that. |

|
Zolasa : No it's called Science. Hawkings is one of the most renowned Scientists in the world. Considered a modern day Einstein by many. @putiiii, Mass created gravity. Gravity is the act of something with mass pulling on another. Also, gravity is a side-effect of the curve of space-time
"God has no role in the Universe" = Atheism |
