I wouldn't ask, I'd probably look at the balloons with a curious look on my face or something. Body language works better for me, and it gives them the option to talk without having the awkwardness of saying "no".

I would probably ask them if they had a marker and start drawing funny faces on all the balloons. But, knowing most guys at my school, they would probably try to bust a move... so then I would leave; after all, we aren't stuck in there?
