Many people go FS first in 3rd job. Here's why they do: Quoted from Basil's Aran guide. Don't know the author of the guide so if someone would tell me, I'll give him/her full credit for the next paragraph Misconception: Combo Critical should be maxed BEFORE Full Swing The Truth: No. NO NO NO. Just because you have red numbers doesn't mean you're stronger. First of all, You need to maintain a combo of 100 or higher to maintain your crit damage/success rate at it's max. Good luck keeping that up, and on top of that, if somehow you managed to hack your combo to always be 100, Max Full Swing is STILL Stronger [b]BUT here's math to prove you wrong.[b] I normally get to 200 combo before rebuffing drain. so half the time I've got this buff. Since combo smash takes up the same time as a while fullswing, we will assume that fullswing is continued for the calculations of the 20 FS 1 crit build. @ 100 combo With 1 crit 20 FS: crit adds ~11% damage to each attack(11% chance of 101% extra damage; the 1 % extra is negligible) so 111%, 121 x 2, 361 = 714 %/FS with 1 FS 20 crit : crit adds 140% damage to each attack(70% chance of 200% extra damage so 140%) so 240%, 212% x 2, 414% =1078% So at 100 combo critical does more damage But what about overall DPM and how much exactly is the difference? 1 crit ,20 FS: 50 FS x 714 % = 35700 % damage/ 200 combo 20 crit 1 FS: Hits 1 -100 25 x 518 = 12950 w/o crit extra crit damage: 1-10: 10% chance of 100% more damage = 10% more per attack, so 100 more total percent damage 11-20: 16% chance of 110% more damage = 17.6% more per attack, so 176 more total percent damage 21-30: 22% chance of 120% more damage = 26.4% more per attack, so 264 more total percent damage 31-40: 28% chance of 130% more damage = 36.4% more per attack, so 364 more total percent damage 41-50: 34% chance of 140% more damage = 47.6% more per attack, 476 more total percent damage 51-60: 40% chance of 150% more damage = 60% more per attack, 600 more total percent damage 61-70: 46% chance of 160% more damage = 73.6% more per attack, 736 more total percent damage 71-80: 52% chance of 170% more damage = 88.4% more per attack, 884 more total percent damage 81-90: 58% chance of 180% more damage = 104.4% more per attack,1044 more total percent damage 91-100: 64% chance of 190% more damage =121.6% more per attack,1216 more total percent damage Total from first 100 combos 20 Crit 1 FS: 12950 + 100 + 176 + 264 + 364 + 476 + 600 + 736 + 884 + 1044 + 1216 = 18810 20 FS 1 Crit: 25 x 714 = 17850 Already crit surpasses fullswing. From 100 combos to 200 combos: 20 crit 1 FS: 1078 x 25 = 26950 20 FS 1 crit: 714 x 25 = 17850 Total damage: 20 FS 1 crit: 17850 + 17850 = 35700 20 crit 1 FS: 26950 + 18810 = 45760 Difference: 10060%/200 hits = 50.3% difference per hit Average damage per hit: 20 Crit 1 FS: 228.8%/hit 20 FS 1 crit: 178.5%/hit So you should max Combo crit before FS for a hefty damage boost. Also if you think that the damage/hit is under par remember that Full swing i

wow, that's pretty awesome! Either way, I went FS first, just because ;) Both are maxed now so it doesn't matter to me, but, I'm sure this will help a lot of people :3

I did FS first on my Aran simply because of the new animation, and the damage. I don't have to have 100 Combo in order to do more than FS. I like FS first better anyway.

Irrelevant for many reasons. 1) Crit is not a consistent damage boost, thus your overall damage is significantly lower. 2) Big bang is right around the corner anyway, where crit is multiplicative rather than additive. This alone makes full swing first stronger than combo crit first, as higher base damage results in higher crit damage. 3) Unless you're constantly surrounded by mobs (WRs being the main training spot at the time that guide was written), full swing first nets more exp/h than combo crit and increases the likelihood that a high HP mob will die faster from combo smash.

A point to add. Since most aran's will be training at windraiders for a few more levels after 70, why bother with combo critical? A windraider has 16000 hp. Spamming combo smash would easily clear out a platform full of windraiders than building up a combo. Seriously, I trained at windraiders by spamming smash and using drain when it would run out.

While I'm at it let me try to prove that level 1 FS w/o combo crit lowers our damage. the attack is slower The total damage is 514%.Where in Triple Swing the total damage is 490% Double swing gets changed to stab, so instead of 2x 72% it is actually ( assuming dex is 40 and str is 400 and WATT is 100) for triple swing the range would be 1240 ~ 2040 x 490 % = 6076 ~ 9996 For Fullswing the range of a regular attack and triple swing is 1240 ~ 2040 x 374% = 4637 ~ 7629 For double swing in full swing the range is 760 ~ 1240 x 144% = 1094 ~ 1785 Total Triple Swing = 6076 ~ 9996 Total Full Swing = 5731 ~ 9414 level 20 triple swing does more damage than level one full swing! I got carried away thx for the reply Sry I only saw the first reply when I posted this. @ Mythicknight umm... I trained at WS from 70 so I can't really say if smash is still useful. @ Takeback3r 1) This calculates the average damage done by crit it could be a little lower or a little higher. 2) It may be. But it isn't out yet so this guide still is in effect. 3) well I trained at WS so I was surrounded by mobs. You can easily keep your combo up if you have have a mount to climb ropes or good speed equips. (not jump, jump slows down cstep jump)

i agree with above posters... i plan on training at wrs until level 80 and right now and my combo smash is already overkilling them so its much faster using combo smash to clear out entire platform than using full swing + critical. its also quite difficult to keep combo up since i kill storm breakers too and when i down jump its already gone...
sorgarione : Double swing gets changed to stab
No it doesn't. It looks like a stab but it's still calculated as a swing. You're 80 and you didn't notice that? I mean, this alone makes this whole thread invalid.

@ takeback3r it is calced as stab. it hits 930 on a single mob when my min damage was 930 And that doesn't change the fact that DPM calculations favor crit > fullswing. % wise. It didn't matter that it is a stab in my calculations (other than the triple swing > greater than level 1 fullswing which I did for fun and when I thought I wasn't getting any replies.)

If it changes to a stab, my average damage would have changed a lot more than it should when getting the first point. Not to mention that it's already been proven on SP.

I did it because it looks cooler, like I always try to lose my combo because for me it's entertaining watching my critical go up, then down, then up, then down

@takeback3r sry I was wrong. You're right. I haven't seen the SP thread, but I realized that my double swing multiplier was less than 100% at that time where it hit 930 when my min damage was 930. However more efficient smash training may be due to its exceptional range, PURE DPM wise 1 into FS and 20 into crit is the best way to go. This is for pure DPM calculations. I know that smash is best for training at spot other than WS. So sorry about that 2. I should have stated that this was based on PURE DPM and % damages. NOT on stab/slash. NOT on training efficiency.
