The phrase "the whole nine yards" comes from World War II Air Force slang. On WWII planes, there were of course, machine guns mounted for dog-fights. The ammo belt for these machine guns was 27 feet (9 yards) long. When a pilot fired off all of his ammo in combat, he was said to have done "the whole nine yards".
