Should I bother applying to college?

When I was a kid I was always told how smart I was, except I've always been lazy and never thought to apply myself more. Grades have never been a reflection of my actual intellect. An IQ test (not one online, a real one) said I had around a 135 (don't know, and don't really care how good this is, just thought I would share). I have a fairly low GPA (somewhere around 2.8-3.0). I don't like to play any sports, and I have pretty much no extracurricular activities, all I do in my free time is work out (1-2 times a day, 4-5 days a week), train how to fight (BJJ, boxing, wrestling), teach myself how to play new songs on guitar, or go out and live and enjoy life. I don't want to get a bunch of damn "Well, we're sorry (lol no we aren't, dumb kid) but, you aren't 'good enough' for our school" rejection letters. I know my dad would save a lot of money if I didn't have to go to school, and honestly I don't care for the majority of college kids. People who drink/do drugs have unprotected sex in excess, spend money like it's nothing, treat other people like crap unless they want something from them, those aren't my type of people. Why would I want to surround myself with the type of people I don't like? A lot of the world's most successful people only have a high school education, and if they did go to college then they dropped out, note that I say a lot, not most, and certainly not all. Most of the guys I look up to never spent a day in college, some of them didn't even finish high school, and they make millions (Think rockstars, MMA fighters, etc). I don't know if I even want to apply to college, I have a huge feeling it'll just be disappointment on my end, not to mention for my family. /end introspection. Share your thoughts please, Basil?

As much as some of the richest came directly from high school, I think post secondary can help your chances in finding a job.

Look at it this way, do you have some big money-making talent or invention? Are you like a super pro at the stock game? If no, go to college, get educated, get qualified, get a decent paying job.

well just to point out to you, most of those successful people dropped out because they already had goals in mind and knew how to get there. I think you should apply anyway, just go to a CC, see which classes you like, and see what interests you. Maybe you'll find something that you feel a deep connection with and just want to pursue. Later on, you can transfer to other colleges to major in that something you want to pursue. :D

A 2 year degree at a junior college is better than nothing. If you for some reason make it to apply yourself there you can transfer to a state college/university from there.

at least go to college cause if your plans dont work out for you, you still got a college degree to fall back on and its much better than a high school diploma

Biggest dream: be a successful pro MMA fighter. Job aspirations: psychologist (I go see one a lot, sometimes we don't even talk about my life, instead we just talk about psychology, I'm fascinated by the brain and what makes it tick) and personal trainer (I love working out, I really can't get enough of it, and I really like helping others, so helping other people get into good shape would be a really great job for me).

Since you have 2.8-3.0 GPA and didn't mention your SAT scores, I don't think you would ever get into a university. So I would advice you to go to your local community college. (Just for back up you know?) But you have to do well in your community college. After cc, you transfer to good university or which ever you want to. CCs are WAY cheaper than 4 year universities. And your fafsa and other government, citizen scholarships would pay for your tuitions and books. Those "world's most successful people" started their own businesses. So, if you want to start your own business. Good luck

As everyone have said already, these rich figureheads already had a goal and such set in stone and went along with it. From a logical standpoint, it would be best to not be lazy (as is with most smart people), attend college, get your degree and actually do something with said degree. If you see or heard of college doing stupid stuff should deter you from going yourself. If they do it, doesn't mean that you have to. Nowadays, going to college isn't really about bettering yourself, but in reality its about job security. Employers tend to pick people with a college education because it looks good on paper and in theory, they're less of a risk. On top of that, you should at least try to get in college (even if its junior or community, there is nothing wrong with that) and at least try it. You never know if you may find something you like from it. Besides, from the looks of it, you're just lounging about anyways. You can do that in between studying. If you still have the high IQ, entrance exams or aptitude tests should be quite easy for you.

3.0 is str8 o.O You can go somewhere with a 3.0 lol I have between 3.0 and 3.5 and top tier schools send me junk all the time. I even got a birthday card from one. Psychology is your thing, are you taking AP Psychology or at least honors? Go for college, it would suck to wonder about the road not taken at the age of 43.

The drop outs are the richest because they are actually good at something. AKA they know about computers or they practice sports/instruments everyday

warjunkie I never took the SAT or ACT, not sure if I even am going to take it. My mom dropped out of college 3 times now, and at age 47 is close to earning her degree. She goes to community college, and will most likely transfer to a university closeby. I'm moving to California, most likely the San Diego area after graduation, and if I do decide to apply to schools I will only apply for ones in California. I live in Virginia, moved here when I was 14, don't like it here, people refuse to even be my friend because to these rich spoiled kids, middle class is "poor"

I'm guessing you watched alot of national lampoon or american pie movies and got it stuck in your head somewhere that the collegiate life of America is nothing more than one big party because I can assure you it's far from it. Granted there are people who do the above things you mentioned but you'd be surprised at how many like minded individuals you could meet.

[/quote] I'd like to suggest that you follow the psychologist/personal trainer path through college. As you're into working out intensely if you apply yourself you should be able to juggle both (college and working out/semi MMA training). The reason I believe you should do both is simply because it's easier to keep putting things off until a later date and still have various options open rather than choosing straight away and closing doors on yourself. You'll find it harder to re-open them if you choose to change your decision later on down the track. Honestly I still don't know what I want to do and I'm 19 years of age. So at present I hold part-time work, attend a university and still have time to work out several days a week. Oh and I also play a few video games on the side after most of my work is out of the way. After finishing high school I was in two minds about going to University or taking a gap year and possibly working full time somewhere. I was coaxed into applying and later accepting my university course and I have not looked back. Sure some days I'll wake up and say to myself "Is this really what I want to be doing?" or "I wonder how easy it will be to get work in this field..." But you know what, it's all experience. Even if you join college, do it for a year and if you hate it to bits, you can quit without any remorse later on knowing that you gave it a go and you never have to try it again. If you want to think about it this way the more things you try, the more things you can eliminate to find out what your life passion is (dream job/lifestyle). Obviously it's entirely your decision but that's my 2 cents.
