What does "wherefore" mean?

O Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo? What does wherefore mean? Let's see how many people really know.

it means "why are you romeo?" as in: she wishes he wasn't a Montague so they could be together at least I think that's what my teacher told me. I kind of forgot

I'm inclined to think it is "why" although it might be "how".

Never thought of it before, but "wherefore" sounds a lot like the swedish word "Varf�r", which means Why.
