I heard my parents talk about moving to New Zealand?

Because of family living there and my dad because of his work or so. They want to stay there for a year. I don't know if they're being serious or not! any ways, can you tell me how the people are any different then the Dutch?(I live in the Netherlands) Like, are they nicer, etc. How do the cities look like? Do they also have summer in the winter like Australia? and are there any obvious things that every New Zealander knows that i should know about?

Moving for just a year is a pain if you'd ask me. But New Zealand is a really pretty place. I heard a lot of the Lord of the Rings scenes were shot there.
