Hey, If any of you are soldiers or are aspiring to become one, feel free to share your stories. Perhaps I was drawn towards the courage, determination, and fearlessness which many soldiers display, perhaps I felt a need to serve my country, and even though my country (Canada) does not currently face any direct military threats, instability in other parts of the world can threaten human rights and democratic values, something which I find is worth fighting for. I�ve always been disgusted by the prospects of �ordinary� life: working ten hours a day behind a desk struggling with office hierarchy. I�d take hiking dozens of kilometers, riding in helicopters, rappelling down cliffs, and shooting weapons over that any day. Add the possibility of travel and a guarantee that I�ll be able to see and experience what most people never get to, a career as a soldier seems very appealing. Perhaps I am drawn to a career promising adventure, travel, and exhilaration, but most of all, I think it�s a fear that I�ll become a nobody, that makes me want to join the army. Growing up as a kid, I�ve always been fascinated by the military. I would read dozens of books and watch many more movies and shows regarding military operations. When I expressed my desire to become a soldier to my parents, they disproved and urged me to do something else. Eventually, I repressed this desire and half-heartedly pursued architectural engineering, choosing all my courses to accommodate this path. I�ve never really been actually good at anything. Sure, I used to played soccer competitively, but it wasn�t something I particularly enjoyed doing. I was mediocre at drawing/painting, did poorly in my classes, and was fit, but wasn�t the fittest. It wasn�t considered �cool� to want to be in the military. I kept it to myself and my desire to join the army was forced in to the back of my head. I enjoyed solitude as much as I did hanging out with friends. Whether it be biking through the empty streets of my neighbourhood when I couldn�t sleep or something as simple as reading a book. When the other kids were out partying, drinking, and having sex, I stayed at home and exercised or played video games. I only managed to lose my virginity about two weeks before I turned seventeen, an age considered late in my generation, and I�ve only had sex three times after that. I wouldn�t consider myself a socially awkward loner. I socialized as much as everybody else did, I just never really enjoyed actual friendships during high school (university's a whole different story ). I hung out with the guys who played soccer, but didn�t feel the same love for the sport as they did. I hung out with the potheads and crackheads, but only did drugs to deal with the reality of my pa�s death. I�ve had girlfriends, but only ever loved one girl (a love of which was unrequited). I've grown to... respect wars in a sense that it isn't "oh hey jim lets sign up for iraq and shoot some towel heads lolololololol oh man i single handedly won the war with a gun i used in call of duty and now i'm a veteran look at me i'm all sad and moody i'm sure to get all the ladies". I'd fight for my freedom or my countries people's freedom, not land or oil. I plan on going through BT sometime in the next year or if I'm not "busy", as lame as that sounds. I do go to the range with my dad maybe once a month and I do have firearms in my house but I really just love plinking, not killing.

I've always wanted to become a soldier as well, enlisted or an officer. Currently I'll be entering the US AFROTC program to receive a commission as an officer. 4 long years ahead... As far as my human instinct is to go out and destroy some bad guys, I really hope wars don't become too major. I guess it's cuz I'm the type of guy who'd go do something heroic, BUT if I had family... I'd be sad to be shipped away..
