This is why sharing account info is a terrible idea

Summary (a.k.a. the reason for my rant) Its infuriating to constantly see threads about people who shared account information later complaining about getting hacked. Sometimes its I only shared with my cousin, and he was with me when I got hacked, so it wasnt him. Sometimes its only my close RL friend knows my info, and I trust them. Regardless of who you shared the info with, youre just asking for trouble. Wait, I take that back, youre not just asking for trouble, youre getting down on your knees and begging, pleading, crying out to the heavens for trouble. So, allow me to please explain why you should never, under any circumstance, for any reason, share your account info with anyone, no matter how trusted. Reason 1- Relationships go sour This is the easy reason to explain, so I wont go into details. Simply put- just because they are your best friend today doesnt mean you wont have a stupid silly fight next week/next month/next year. Heck, forget a big dramatic fight, you might simply drift apart and forget about each other. And when this inevitably occurs, they will have all the temptation in the world to steal your stuff. Reason 2- Technical reasons I dont care how trustworthy the person is. I dont care if they are dying of liver disease and the only donor thats a match is you and you will withhold the life-saving liver if they hack your account- thats still not a guarantee that your account info wont be used to steal all your stuff. Why? Simple- Even if the person is 100% trustworthy, youre still trusting that their PC is perfectly clean. Youre trusting that their little brother didnt download any stupid Trojan. Youre trusting that they have every Windows/IE/Firefox/Flash Player/Acrobat Reader/etc patch up to date. Youre trusting that they and everyone who has ever used their computer (their mom, dad, baby sister, older brother, cousins, grandparents, everyone!) has been focused on IT security. You're basically trusting a PC that you have 0 control over. To put it bluntly- Youre acting foolish beyond all reasonable belief. If you have no control over their computer, then that computer shouldnt log into your account, period. Ask yourself- What version of flash player do they have? How about Adobe Reader? Did they install MS patch 2183461 on August 10? (I hope so- it stops a website from being able to install software on your machine...)? Are they running the latest quicktime build, or the one that came with their ITunes? Do they know how to defend against 0-day releases? (hint- I doubt any of us know how to defend against a well written 0-day exploit) They might be the best person in the world, but you're doubling/tripling/whatever-ing your chances of getting your account info stolen when you spread that info across multiple computers. Reason 3- It gets easier over time Once youve demonstrated your own foolishness to the world by sharing your account info once, it becomes easier to do it a 2nd time. Once youve ha

[/quote] Russian roulette- pull the trigger a few more times and see how well it goes a month/3 months/1 year from now. You're not 100% guaranteed to be hacked by sharing your info, just like you're not 100% guaranteed to get mugged walking through the worst part of Detroit at 3 AM while yelling "Abe Lincoln was a jerk for freeing the slaves". I still wouldn't want to chance it though. |

I am, I used to, and I will share my accont Even if I fight with my friend we stil respect each other and know each other enough time to not let it affect MS. We might be mad sometimes but it never gets to MS About their pc, I trust his judgement . If he downloads a file that is risky and we do end up getting hacked then I also trust him to make it up for me. So, MY final thought, is that you have really hard trust issues. Im not encoureging people to share their account but why flame the people who do? Ive been doing it for nearly three years now and everythings just fine. Will you get married? I mean... what if you piss your wife off and she steals your kid? Or how do you trust her to leave her alone in your aparment and know she wont steal your stuff? TRUST man. Not anyone, only those who deserve it.

I've shared my info with one person, and she hasn't taken anything from me. In fact when the "relationship soured" I'M the one who went on her account and screwed things up. I of course apologized afterwards and returned everything, and we're friends now, but to this day I still feel bad about it.

I fully endorse this thread, although I'm pretty sure it's no big deal that I shared my info with the mother of my son. :p I can't count how many of my Maple friends were stupid enough to account share, only to lose everything. Most of them proceeded to quit. And what motivation is there behind account sharing anyway? If your friend is on your account training you, are you on their account training them? Why not just train your own bloody character? The worst part is you're always "hacked". No, you weren't hacked, you unlocked your safe, gave your friend the key to your house, then went on a month-long vacation.

I have a close friend that has had access to every single one of my accounts for all four years of my mapling. Never before has he taken a single meso from me. When I still played GMS, I had over 63b in equips. I would have been the easiest target for him and yet he did nothing. It just depends on who it is.

That happened with me. I used to share account this someone I known for a really long time. His friend hacks the account but only took a few items and he starting blaming me for it so I changed the info.
