Is IB worth it?

I'm having a really tough time deciding on if IB is worth it or not. I do not have plans on studying abroad, but the pride of walking around the school with a MAC Book is really tempting. Also, people will have a great first impression of me if I say I'm part of the IB class. I'm also pretty sure I can handle the pressure and difficulty. For those who don't know, IB is like an international program in which students are taught using a uniform subject matter. It gives a bonus when applying to study abroad since there isn't any discrimination no matter which country you come from. Ex. I study in the Philippines. A representative from a college abroad might go, "Hey, he's from the Philippines, a third world country! His education should be inferior compared to education given by us Americans!", but once he sees the IB logo on my application, he'll go, "I have no reason to discriminate, since his education is on par with the education we give!"

I regret dropping out (of the IB program). Don't ask me how but I got a 6 on the music exam o.O (My theory has never been the greatest relative to my practical). I only got a 4 in the course however since I busted my wrist 2 days before recording day... I think I got a 5 on the History exam? I regret not taking IB for everything else, but I hear Biology is retarded.

I'm going to an IB school and it sucks. Way more work than normal schools, and it's not even any "better."

Any course you get a 5 or higher in can count as a first year university credit. Saving an entire years worth of university fees is MORE than worth it in my eyes!

You can also just take course that are one year ahead. I just finished grade 10 with grade 11 bio and chem, so I can go to a different school to take AP. Which is pretty much a 1 year course of 1st year university. If you do well, you can skip the 1st year of university. My brother finished AP and he had a choice to skip 1st year, but he would rather do it again to perfect the first year. I am following my brothers foot steps. This is just an idea.

It's only worth it I guess if you take school outside of Canada/U.S., or if you plan on applying to universities in Canada/U.S./England. It does get pretty stressful, so only do it if you can manage your time pretty well (or if you can't, you better not mind staying up for many nights). I worked so hard to get my 42/45, and in the end it got me some university credits, so I guess I'm neutral towards it. =/

[/quote] The system is different in Finland, so it acutally doesn't make you get to university any easier S: However, if you plan to go study abroad it will be helpful.

Lolol don't take it if you're applying for Canada. They absoulutely don't care as long as you're not from a third-world country education background. Getting a 70% is enough to enter into university these days (though obviously the 80+ get accepted first)

My local University which only has 6000 students charges like 6.4K to North Americans and like 12.8K to foreigners. That's without residence fees. That is a LOT of money, almost half a years work at where I am now. Plus my university is fairly cheap relative to the other schools in Canada. McGill? Try like 30K. I was speaking specific to his situation.

Of course it is often more expensive to study abroad, but if you live in a country like Finland, he universities necessarily aren't very good, so if you do have the money, IB education makes it easier for you to get in. If you live in a country like mine, where most of the universities really suck, but you have the money to study abroad, an IB education might be helpful for you to get in a certain university. Different countries have different systems for this, though, so I'm only talking what I know of.

I was speaking specific to his situation. [/quote] Universities here are only 4k a year :K Also, you can't drop from the IB program in my school. You're stuck with it for the rest of the school year. D: Thanks for the opinions guys. Of course I won't rely on Basil to decide for me, it's just that I keep getting useless opinions from my parents, like "If you want to," or "If you think you can handle it."

What SL/HLs did you do? @ TS - IB is a big time saver if you want to study abroad at a top British university because : 1) You can study medicine as an undergraduate granted you have at least 38~40 points and relevant HLs, therefore graduating 3/4 years earlier. 2) Degrees in the UK are only 3 years for the bachelors and 1 year for a masters, therefore saving yourself some more time/money 3) Oxford/Cambridge/other top unis discriminate against APs and they don't seem to accept SATs at all, so you'll be best off with IB as they're a bit more lenient. 4) Tuition fees are standardised, therefore you'll be paying roughly the same regardless of university. Just think about that, 3.3k a year at Cambridge opposed to whatever ridiculous amount Harvard would charge. 5) If you want to study law, dentistry, vetmed, other graduate courses then you can study them as an undergraduate in the UK which might be better for you if you want to save time/money.
