Good Argument Against Suicide

Well Basilmarket, I've been trying to come up with some decent argument against Suicide, but I really just can't find anything. The closest thing I found to a satisfactory argument is: 1. Killing yourself hurts others 2. It is wrong to hurt others Needless to say, there are numerous problems with this. For example, if a person has never encountered any other human being, how can he possibly hurt anyone else by committing suicide? At best, this argument is just situational. Another problem is that an act of ending a bad friendship also hurts someone else, and, under this view, would be morally wrong. A more curious objection is that by choosing to continue to live, you are subjecting yourself to more pain and suffering, and that by not letting you commit suicide, your friends and family are acting immorally (at least, if the premises of this argument are true). Really, the best thing I can say against suicide is that it is a less than optimal choice, but that doesn't make it wrong, just unfavorable. And even then, that too can be situational. So, Basilmarket, what do you think?

[/quote] That just makes suicide a decision with far-reaching consequences, but by the same token, it also destroys any further possibilities of failure, suffering, etc. It's not a good argument at all.

Here's a really good argument against suicide - if you want to spite your enemies, live for a long time. It helps when I'm feeling depressed.

[/quote] True. As I said to you earlier, I honestly think the best reason is religion. You can make valid arguments for almost anything, but suicide.
