What's the difference between Christianity and Catholicism?

Could you elaborate? I was told that Christians differ from Catholics that they don't follow church rules in that they don't need a pope to be able to talk to god.

Christianity is like a 'main' religion, Catholicism is a branch of Christianity. In big lines they are the same, but with some differences.

Catholicism is christianity. Catholicism and protestantism are christianity's two main branches. What you're calling 'christianity' is protestantism.

There are many different branches of Christianity. Before the 1500s, Catholicism was the only form of Christianity. But it was until Martin Luther thought that the Catholic church was not conservative enough and not fundamental enough. So with the help of politics, he was able to split away from the Catholic church and formed the Protestant branch of Christianity (hence the protest). And then in due time, many more branches of Christianity started to arise. So which one do you feel you belong too. If you have a broad liberal view of Christianity, don't focus on the Bible too much, and support some positions that most Christians frown upon (ie, premarital sex, homosexuality, birth control, etc.), then you would most likely fit in with the Episcopalians, Uniteds, Unitarians, or other liberal forms of Protestantism. If you have a fundametally conservative view of Christianity, follow the Bible word for word, and prefers to follow the laws of Christianity as opposed to the laws of the government, then you would most likely fit in with the Evangelicals, Baptists, Orthodoxs, Adventists, Pentacostals, or other conservative forms of Protestantism. If you have a moderate view of Christianity, then you would most likely fit in with the Catholics. And if Christianity itself does not work for you, then there are also a bunch of other religions of the world. Its not what you can do for religion, its what religion can do for you. catholic is a more traditional ritual version of mainstream christian. Their sermons are the most boring by far.
