IPhone 3g Help

My dad had the IPhone 3g, but then he got the 4g, so he gave me the IPhone 3g. The problem is it had no service, so I had to Jailbreak it. But now I'm wondering if I can use the 3g connection as internet. It still has the SIM card in it.

I did try it, But my house does not have cell service, so I wouldn't know. But it does display that "No bar symbol".

Jailbreak it, use Cydia, and unlock it. OT: What OS are you using? Because I can find you a YouTube tutorial showing how easy it is.
