A good offense or defense?

Say you had to pick one style of fighting to learn/practice/go by for the rest of your life, would you choose an offensive or a defensive form of fighting? Offensive being, moves that are direct in inflicting damage. Defensive being, moves that are capable of stopping or weakening any direct form of injury but can also inflict indirect pain/damage.

How do you indirectly inflict damage to someone? Like tripping them so they land face first and break their nose?

Defensive, you don't want the other person to charge you for assault in a fight if it ever goes to court.

Defensive. You can be as skilled at fighting as much as you want, but if you can't even stop the other guy from hitting you, you won't be winning very long..

Offensive as in kick-boxing Defensive as in Karate? I'd go with defensive, since you can always run after you've defended yourself
