Okay sorry mods if this isn't aloud. Idk if it is just delete it. Okay now ive been talking about selfishness with this guy and I bring up that he should commit suicide( don't worry no one on basil therefore I'm not attacking other users, just sayin) so he brings up it Being selfish for one to do so, because"your killing yourself and putting your wants and needs ahead of others. I came back with telling him that is it not selfish for one to stop one from commuting suicide Because your putting your needs and wants infront of theirs. So thoughts about all of this thanks and mods again anything wrong just delete the thread because sometime you guys can be so up tight, about some rules.

being somebody who has had suicidal troubles in the past, i personally HATE when people tell a suicidal person what they are doing is selfish. if somebody is seriously considering offing them self they have a psychological problem which is NOT selfish. it's NOT their fault, and they're trying to get help. /steam

It's just not fair what they do to the ones that love them.

I too have had deep seated psychological scars that have sometimes led me to have suicidal thoughts. However, as long as there is one person that genuinely cares for you, then you should not commit suicide. Committing suicide hurts even more than when someone dies of natural causes, mainly because the people that knew you would begin to blame themselves for what happened. As long as the person thinks about them, then they can turn away from this path.

Suicidal people are selfish, there will always be someone they hurt when they take their own life. Whether the mental instability is caused by someone else or not, in the end it is that person and only that person's decision.

Eh I see where your coming from but looking from it from someone else prespective would it not be considered selfish to stop the loved one from commiting suicide? I mean the only reason that said person would be attempting to commit suicide in the first place is because there depressed from the people and environment around them?(yes ? No? Just wondering here) @ abv: but does it not take courage to commit suicide because you understand at somepoint what your leaving behind? @2 abv : I could be totally wrong but aren't you contridicing yourself? By saying they are selfish but in the end it is their decision and only their decision?
But if you love them and you stop them is that true love because if it where true love for someone would, you not want the person to be happy and die or keep them alive and let them suffer even more? @abv but what if that person is having serious problems that not many have and doesn't know any other way out besides commiting suicide? Btw they must have some guts to commit suicide because it wouldn't be a easy to do. I mean all the emotional stress and all that.

wetpeeWow, my wall of text might actually help you! HERE! Selfish - putting your own needs first before satisfying the needs of others IMO, for Christians the idea of being selfless is "simple": put God as your #1 priority. As one of my small group members at WR said "it's to the extent where God becomes our second list of priorities" that we are selfish. What if we aren't Christian though? Where do we draw the line between selfish vs. selfless? Is it arbitrary? Personally, I think selfishness is too vague a topic to decide whether an act, intention, or thought is selfish or selfless. There are millions of different situations with complicated backgrounds that impair our judgment of selfishness. Selfless intentions/Selfish actions: The first example I thought of is talking to someone at a bar. The reason to go there is because it is the only place that the person can open up to you (perhaps after a couple shots of vodka :P). However, there have been problems in the past of your addiction to alcohol. The intention is to solve that person's problem by being there for him/her and listening to their problem. However, the REAL reason you're there may be to justify your addiction. You might think "I'm counseling someone" but really you're the one that needs counseling, you're the one with the addiction. Another example could be to be friends with someone who's unpopular. It's similar to the friendship between Drake and Craig and Eric from Drake and Josh. At first, you might see someone lonely sitting by themselves on a bench. You feel bad for them because it seems like they have no one to talk to. As you begin to talk to him/her, he/she begins to trust you more. So you ask them to do you favors like borrow money, and give them rides to places. Sometimes the favors might become larger (ie: paying for restaurant bill, loan their car, live in their house for a few days). Whenever they feel like they're taking advantage of you, then you can just say "who talked to you when no one else would?" The intention may look selfish as he/she does favors for you but look at it in a different light. I became their friend first, and they're simply returning the favor (like a charity case). Is the intention as selfish now?... Selfish intentions/Selfless actions: I think it's a little easier to visualize situations like these, because we judge people quite often so I won't use as long of an explanation. Community service is a selfless action, and some high school students just do it for the hours (like I did for the United Way club at my school last year). Donating a lot of money to charity is also selfless yet their intention is to show that they are a good person. Sometimes being legalistic bring about these kinds of situations and a common intention might be for their reputation or a position to show that they are "pure" and "holy". Selfless intentions/Selfless actions: IMO, the concept is simple, but to carry the concept out takes courage. I think it's something that can

I remember reading something concerning this, it was really interesting.
Somebody : May 25th, 2008 I tried to commit suicide years ago. And it wasn't for attention. I felt it took a lot of courage - after all, I had no 100% guarantee of what I was getting myself into. I didn't feel like a weakling, I was sure others didn't do it because THEY were weak and just wanted to project their feelings unto suicidal people. I felt I was being very selfless - perhaps some would grieve for a few days, then move on with their lives. All the better for my not being a part of it any longer. Strength? I was empowered after all. I had the final say. How much more powerful is that. Instinct of self-preservation? Not too sure on that one, since I didn't want to preserve my life. This was not a scare tactic, this was going to be the end. Well, I survived the suicide attempt. And I hated that I had done so. In fact, one of my first thoughts was: next attempt whatever I did wrong, I have to make sure I get it right! So I come back to consciousness after being in a coma for days. And this is what I found: A heartbroken wife (now ex-wife, and I don't blame her one bit) for not thinking I'd be leaving her alone. 3 children that didn't have a clue what had happened, but were smart enough to figure out it was bad and that somehow I hadn't thought of them first, but rather of myself and my pain. Both their mother and they are 100% correct. It was the most selfish thing I ever did. Ever. Cowardly? I realized my wife, kids, parents, friends continued to move forward, including me in their lives. And I realized what 'strength' and 'courage' and 'selfless' really was. And I saw that they had not only the instict of their own self-preservation, but to carry enough for me until I could have some of my own again. What's my opinion? If I could turn back time, I would NEVER have let those thoughts get the better part of me. I wish I could go back and undo that day. And I wish I had the 'courage' to see how 'weak and cowardly' I was going to behave by doing this. And how selfish, how horribly selfish I was going to be behaving in carying it through. How narcisistic I was behaving, while in my mind making myself out to be so 'noble' I would get out of everyone's way so we could all be happier. In one word, it was bull___, and I was full of it. It takes an enormous amount of courage, strength and selflesness to face life. And the only ones that overcome the instinct of self-preservation out of selflesness are the ones that though wanting to live, give their lives for us. I've been told I'm very opinionated. I know without a doubt, having lived this and putting so many through such a horrible nightmare has cemented my opinions on this one. Life is ironic. Since then, I've had some very close to me committ suicide. While I understood their pain, I see none as being anything but what I was. A selfish, weak coward that chose to hurt others than to fight the good fight to overcome t

How is suicide an easier way of resolving issues? Do you know anyone that has commited suicide? Have you ever thought about it? The stress is unbearable, afterwords all the never mind.. I don't think you fully understand the subject. Suicide should never be a way to resolve an issue.
