All purpose video downloader ?

Are there video downloaders that don't are not in FLV format? All downloaders from Firefox download in FLV, and I need files in another format like avi or something. Not only for Youtube, but for all sites. Any suggestions?

Can't you just rename the .flv to .avi?

Well I don't know about you, but when I rename media files they automatically convert... You only really need converters if you want to change the location of the media file you want to view, like comp->tv or comp->iPod etc. Or maybe it's just me...
