Building pc need help.

I'm wanting to create my own desktop and need help with where to purchase and parts. I'll have up to 1000$ to make it. I know i want 3 usb ports, 6 gigs of ram, 500gb hard drive, and a good cpu(2.5ghz or better) yet i'm not well aware about motherboards. Any help is appreciated.

$1000 is MUCH more then enough to make an epic gaming PC. I recommend that for a processor u get a i7(the most popular processor out today), for a graphics card a Radeon 5850( Its currently one of the best graphics cards for only $289, and you will be playing all the current games with maximum settings and still get like 60 FPS), and 6gb of DDR3 ram. I dont know a lot about motherboards so thats up to someone else to help you with.

Sorry i failed to mention that. The pc will be for videos, maple, web browsing, and possibly a number of new games. Diablo 3 whenever that is. And some fps like counterstrike. I was looking into the i7 so i may get that. My main concern is still the motherboard since i need one that can withstand all i want and still have room for improvements.

Videos as in DVDs and movie files? Or Video editing? FPS games like BFBC2, MW2, FC2, etc? And are you a moderate gamer that is happy to play all games at like mid-ish or a person that want everything close to maxed out on high res? Also do you need a mouse, keyboard, speakers, monitor, etc. in that budget of $1000. As for a mobo, you need to figure out which kind of processor you will go with first, as it will determine the socket type you need to get. Chances are, I probably going to recommend an i5 processor for you needs which uses an LGA1156 mobo. I'm pretty sure that most, if not all 1156 mobo, will have 3 USB ports in the back anyways, but that can be easily look up so not much of a problem. Also get 4GB rather than 6GB and get more if you actually need it (chances are you won't).

Im pretty sure he doesnt want to have to go upgrade it in 2 years, so its good to get the best stuff right now.

[/quote] I reccomend you get the i7 and the 6gb of ram, and the radeon 5850, just so you wont have to go upgrade your computer again in 2 years.

you don't need to buy the biggest and baddest (and also most expensive...est) processor just to play games. also, contrary to popular belief, more ram doesn't mean your computer will be faster. you probably won't ever utilize more than 4 gigs at peak usage as for "3 usb ports" that's pretty standard. my motherboard, like most, has 6 usb ports, and with my case i have access to another 2. if you want 3 usb ports in the front, then i guess that would make a difference with what case you buy, but only that

How about getting a Phenom II X4 or the i5 instead of the i7 if you're not going to do any video editing? It's cheaper and it's performance in games aren't that much lower than a i7 920. EDIT As for the video card... you should be able to run (and record) pretty much any game you want with a 5850. Heck, a 5770 or a 5830 would work for most games.

I know the ram doesn't mean it'll be faster. I'm a constant multi tasker though and just wanted 6 gigs to be on the safe side. I currently have 3 in my laptop and it feels like it's lacking. Though i'm sure the cpu has a part in it also. I'm going to compare prices of the parts and i don't want to purchase a decent part when i could pay a bit more to have a better one. It's better than buying a better one in the future since i'll be paying more.

[/quote] If I got the price and math correctly in my head, going with an i7 930, 6GB of RAM, a HD5850, and all the other components, it will cost him around $200-250 over budget (including the OS). So if he wants to stay in budget using an i7 build, he would need to skim down the GPU to like the HD5750-5770 and with some good combos. But since the most intensive thing he will be doing is gaming, i5-750 would be more than sufficient for his needs and use that extra money gain for his GPU. [/quote] And I RARELY go over 3GB and I multitask all of the time. Only time I do is when I'm playing games with other crap running in the background. xD Quite honestly, 4GB is more than sufficient for you. And if you so happen to need more, you could easily upgrade it later. It's better to buy it when you know you need it, than buy it "just in case" and never going to use it.

The i5 and 4 gb ram seem efficient enough to me. Total of the 2 is about 320 (newegg). Now i need to figure out the mobo and gpu. Also if anyone has another place they recommend to purchase parts i'd appreciate it.

if you live on the continental US, newegg is 95% of the time the best place to buy parts from imo. i think you should look your budget over again, and come up with a price range. or maybe include a new monitor/keyboard/mouse/os in the budget. $1000 is a lot of money to be spending; and if you could save money, then why not. i built myself a $600 pc and i guarantee you it could run any game. granted, it definitely can't touch high req games at high settings, but i don't play those games anyways. it will probably handle diablo 3 just fine
