Please identify what your background is and then answer these questions. 1. Describe a family meal, regularly scheduled, at which all or most of the family members were expected to be present. (If no such occasion occurred in the family, explain how food was routinely prepared and shared among family members.) 2. Did everyone eat together? (Sitting down at the same time? Could anyone leave before others were done, or start a new course before others did?) 3. What roles did different family members assume � Who did what? (Who brought the food to the house, who cooked, who served, who set the table and cleaned up? If anything else was needed during the meal (e.g., ketchup), who got it? Who got served first, next, and last?) 4. How did conversation (if any) take place? (What was talked about, who did the talking, did anyone have special rights to speak or were all speakers equal in their opportunity to talk?) 5. Describe the food consumed during the meal, in the order in which it was served and consumed.

swedish/irish/taiwanese/greek 1. dad prepares almost all of the food. spends about 1-2 hours making it all, as we have a rather large family 2. sometimes we all eat together. usually just depends. when we have people over we usually all sit/stand around the kitchen because it's entertainment-built. looks kind of like a bar. other times we all just eat whenever we're hungry, as most of my siblings are involved in lots of activities so there's almost rarely a time when we're all home 3. mom/dad buys food. dad prepares it. if somebody needs something out of the fridge they usually ask whoever is closest. we all bring our dishes over to the sink and rinse them off. mom usually loads them into a dishwasher. 4. we usually talk about whatever is brought up. usually never anything too personal. maybe something my baby sister did that day (she's autistic so most of the attention is on her) 5. usually there's a main dish (some sort of meat) a side of vegetables, a side of fruit, and some sort of potato lol

Dutch/French/British/Norwegian 1 - Every other Sunday (this is irregular, sometimes it is actually several consecutive Sundays) is "family meal." Includes my dad, stepmom and stepbrother, as well as my stepsister with her boyfriend and two children (previous marriage). On occasion my stepaunt is there or some family friends join us. 2 - We all sit down at the same time and stay until we're all done. Meal isn't served in courses, so there's no waiting for that. 3 - Dad and stepmom tend to do most of the cooking, but anybody who is asked to help is willing, and sometimes my stepaunt/sister/family friends will bring dishes they've prepared. Serving is done via passing all the different dishes around the table in a circle. Closest to the kitchen is usually the "runner," and everybody takes their own dishes (with the exception of the kids) as well as pitching in to clear the other dishes. Handwashing/drying is done by the first two people willing to do it. 4 - Conversation is random in topic and occurrence, anybody is free to speak so long as they don't interrupt another. 5 - A single main dish in most cases, but two or three main dishes aren't unheard of. Traditionally it's something like a roast, ham, casserole, or something grilled/barbequed. Soup is also a pretty big deal with my stepmom, but my dad doesn't like soup in Summer. Side dishes are usually a few vegetables and potatoes. All of that is served simultaneously as it is already on the table and we just pass it around. No fruit or dessert is set out, though the latter is usually saved until the end if anybody has room for it and wants some.

Mum would call out "dinner's ready" and all of us (dad, brother and myself) would head to the dining room from whatever we were doing before. 2. Did everyone eat together? (Sitting down at the same time? Could anyone leave before others were done, or start a new course before others did?) Brother and I typically finish earlier than parents, so we head back to whatever we were doing, while parents might still be there chatting a bit. Unless dad is working overtime, we always wait for him for dinner. 3. What roles did different family members assume � Who did what? (Who brought the food to the house, who cooked, who served, who set the table and cleaned up? If anything else was needed during the meal (e.g., ketchup), who got it? Who got served first, next, and last?) Mum did the cooking, cleaning, table setting. If we want second helpings of rice or anything else, unless it's something that we were physically unable to do (ie. rice cooker placed too high for brother), we generally got up and helped ourselves. 4. How did conversation (if any) take place? (What was talked about, who did the talking, did anyone have special rights to speak or were all speakers equal in their opportunity to talk?) We generally talked about the events of our day, or stuff from the news (recently, it's been mostly stuff about the FIFA matches and teams). Nobody has any special rights over anybody, except that you weren't supposed to interrupt whatever someone was saying. 5. Describe the food consumed during the meal, in the order in which it was served and consumed. Not too picky about procedures; we don't have set courses (unlike western families) in our meals.

[quote] Deciduous : -waits for Mark, too- [/quote] you rang, sir? -- mostly irish, some scottish and american blood too 1) mom prepares most of the food beforehand e.g. peeling potatoes or whatever, then dad'll actually cook it. depending on the meal it might take a while or it might be something quick. after that we'll just come in and eat 2) most of the time we eat in separate rooms, but every sunday and monday evening we'll eat together in the dining room. mom is like a really slow eater so dad and i tend to get up and start washing up/whatever before she's done, lol 3) we all get food from the supermarket or dad might go to a butcher if we needed something special. mom and dad cook in tandem with dad normally pulling most of the weight. we serve ourselves most of the time and i'm usually the one to set the table and clean up afterwards. if we forgot to bring something to the table mom would go get it since she was closest. i'm the first to bring my plate to the table most of the time since i always take less than my parents because i either dislike what they're having or i take a smaller portion since i'm never hungry lol 4) conversation just sort of happens. usually something topical or to do with some situation that only we would understand (indie family). we all have the same rights to speak but mom like never talks 5) always potatoes with some meat and veg if we're dining at the table. errbody eats their stuff in a different order
