Looking for an exciting book

So yeah, as an aspiring writer, I've always marveled at how some books can move either move from scene to scene or how they can keep the action going within a scene. I'm looking for a book to read with any level of character development, but that is effective when it comes to plot development. Oh, and I suppose it'd be nice if it's something you actually like reading. :I Anybody have a book name for me that might fit this? :D

Anyways, yeah, I'm a fan of fiction ("Science-y" is okay. :I), fantasy, mystery, and sometimes war stuff. e: Uhh, I'm 18 and have graduated from High school, so it may come as a shock, but... I've never read 1984 since it was never a requirement.

I'd suggest Douglas Coupland books for character development. Microserfs, Girlfriend in a Coma, and Hey Nostradamus are my favourites.

He's basically the king of the science-fiction genre. [Look, I made a funny.]

mmmm I loved both books by James St. James, Party Monster & Freakshow although those are more comedyish kinds of books, and freakshow tends to be predictable. have you ever read Perfume? n__n

Eragon is too childish. easy reading. I have my summer reading books for ap english for my senior year. I'm reading The Kite Runner at the moment and it has taken me in, once i sit down with it, i just cant stop reading. This is exactly what you're looking for, i guarantee it :p And i dont enjoy reading btw, only when i find extremely good books.

I just want to see some variations in how people do it to contrast it with how I write my own stories. Plus, I want to enjoy them. :I

A little disturbing at some points though. EDIT: If you like creepy stuff, you really should try King. The guy's even written a book on writing. It's called On Writing.
