It doesn't necessarily have to be intelligent life, but when do you think we will discover life? I mean, have you heard about Gilese 581c? Say hello to Gliese 581c. A possible new homeworld that has been newly discovered to be completely covered in ocean; a waterworld deeper than ten times that of Earth�s deepest trenches. There must be life there! When will we actually see it? We'd have to be hundreds of thousands of years advanced in technology to do so, don't you think?

Well, water IS necessary for life "as we know it". BUT- intelligent life..? Very few planetary systems are likely to have the whole suite of special circumstances the Earth does that ALLOW life to develop beyond bacteria without getting wiped out again and again.
