Learning Japanese, is it hard?

So I was planning to teach myself to speak Japanese over the summer, and pursue it throughout senior year and maybe further. My question is...is the language hard to learn? Is there alot of vocab stuff like in french or spanish where they have genders and such, or is it simple like english where all you have to do is learn the words. Also...what language do you think I should learn? I was leaning towards Japanese cause I wanna travel to japan some day, it seems really interesting there. Also I watch tons of anime, and gotta wait forever for new episodes, so hell if Ive been watching japanese shows for 8 years now, might aswell learn the language. thanks

it depends on your ability to understand new languages, but it will be more difficult opposed to another roman-based language because of the different alphabet it's honestly not that hard, to me anyways, because each character has a different pronunciation, so if you had two characters, you just combine them to make different words speaking it is easier for me 'cause writing it is kind of hard swedish is a beautiful language though. i love it, and i have to learn it soon 'cause i'm planning on moving there maybe

No, it's not hard to learn to speak it. But I would imagine it'd be hard to write/read it. There's like what, 112 letters in the "alphabet"?

I take Japanese in school, and I have to admit it's not as hard as I thought it would be. I suggest taking Spanish though because it might be more useful.

My grandma sent me to japanese school for a while. I guess it could be considered harder since u have to learn completely new characters? All i learned was hiragana and katagana, and can hold a very weak conversation in japanese. I learn more speaking from just around the house though (my grandma speaks japanese). Kanji looks really confusing...

[/quote] writing isnt that hard if you've had experience writing any kinda chinese but i dont think he has D: it isnt hard to write, just difficult to construct sentences correctly

[/quote] Uhm...hiragana + katagana = 46x2. Then for hiragana and katakana, theres the variations that allow you to use syllables such as "Pya", and then the other ones which use a "ten-ten(?)" that let u make more than what is provided on the charts, such as "Da". Then theres kanji...so i think its way more than 112...And i think Romaji = more characters? Idk..i never went past katagana+hiragana ><

Japanese is problematic for many people in my school, though it is one of the best in the US. Still, many of my friends can't seem to get pass Jap 1 or 2 since they have no background info whatsoever. If you're Chinese, then you'll have some understanding of the language. IMO, Chinese is the hardest language to learn since it has no alphabet :/ I'm Chinese myself and I don't even know 30 characters D: Spanish is def. the easiest to learn if you already know English. There's SO many cognates and whatnot. I'm currently a freshman about to finish Spanish 4 and it is hands-down the easiest language to learn if you have a decent teacher. It also comes handy if you live in a Hispanic-filled place like NY.

[/quote] lets not count kanji cuz like chinese characters(which they actually are for the most part or based off of them) they're limitless @_@ its not the hardest language to learn tho. it'll be fine if you're interested in it :P

The way I learned it, there's a formal and an informal way in Japanese. The alphabet isn't really that hard to learn except there's 2 type of writing style: hiragana and katakana. Japanese is probably one of the easier languages to speak because all the sounds are really to say (unlike some languages where you have to roll your R's).

If you're good at memorizing it's easy. Back in 7th grade when I was lazy and didn't try I found it hard but 3 years later I think it's one of my easier classes. But learning to read kanji I would say is the hardest part mostly because the kanji can be conjugated in more than 1 way.
