The opposite of choice?

Help me out real quick, chat section! I'm writing a term paper about about the importance of choice. If our ability to choose is suppressed, we cease to be human beings. Its now entitled "Choice is Progress, Force is Nothing" Force doesn't seem to fit, but I need a word that is the opposite of choice, that captures how without choice, we are nothing. Do you guys have any suggestions?

technically it'd probably be instinct. if you think about, humans have the ability to make choices/exercise free will, but the actions of animals are almost purely based off instinct with no individual thought but in your case, i'd probably go with something like oppression or dictation, idk

Thanks guys for the help! I really appreciate it. I like restraint/restriction/controlled. I think these are the most direct words for my paper @clouded: Yeah, instinct makes sense in your situation. My situation is different though because its on a book where the protagonist has his ability to choose ripped away, so he becomes only a machine capable of doing "good."

[/quote] I get what you're saying, and you're partially right, that its not exactly destroying the definition of human beings. But the book isn't about a totalitarian system controlling people. Its about a person who can't make choices, quite literally. He's been conditioned into a state where he's always forced to make "good" decisions. But paradoxically, I can't tell you the name of the book because if I do, I just spoiled half of the story. So I hope you'll find the book in the future lol xD
