| I saw the other thread, and was kinda curious myself... What's the top college you think I can get into? My freshman year GPA was 3.0. Sophomore year (unweighted was 3.8, weighted was 4.2) Junior year (unweighted 4.0, weighted 5.0). I'll total out to 10 AP's, all at 4's or 5's. My SAT score is 2200. SAT II Chinese : 800 SAT II Math 2 : 800 SAT II Biology : 780 Others: 200 Hours of Community Service Founder of Key Club @ my school Principle member of MUN club Co-Founder of Greenpeace club Varsity football, varsity badminton. I live in California. Oh, and I have legacy to Stanford (my brother went). Almost forgot, I'm Asian. How much will my freshman year's horrible GPA screw me over? Where can I get into? :O Thanks! |

| Damn, that's pretty good. I think that most universities should out-rule your freshman year GPA, and look at your grades 10-12 GPA instead. Your extra curriculars look pretty impressive (except for the principles members of MUN club. try to get an officer position), and the # of AP's are rather impressive too. Your SAT could be higher, and if you were ranked in your sports that would be even more impressive. I'd have to say that most colleges should accept you, but i'm not sure about all the ivy leagues. But you'll probably be a shoo-in for most UC's (UCLA & UC berkeley maybe), NYU, UPenn, BU, USC, Northwestern and other similar schools. Getting into Ivy's will probably depend upon your personal statement & the common app. But overall, it looks pretty impressive. |

| I see, thanks. I think I could get an officer position for MUN... definitely not ranked for sports though haha. What else should I improve on to raise my chances at an Ivy? I think I could write a pretty compelling personal statement, but is there anything else I should be working on in the next year? |

No. In fact, most colleges turn down students just because they're Asian. They want more diversity, and our monotonously high GPA's just don't cut it anymore. |

[/quote] Well, go for as many APs as you can next year (3 or 4 is good), and maintain a high GPA for the 1st semester, considering how your going to be a senior, and 2nd semester is not as intense. If you feel uncomfortable about your SATI score, take it again (as colleges take the highest scoring part of each section). Do something that is unique or interesting over summer (like volunteer in North Africa and build homes or whatever) or intern/volunteer at a company that specializes in the field you plan on majoring in (they might already be closed for applications because they tend to fill up quickly or have a small window of oppurtunity.) But for now, focus on your GPA & SAT IIs and think about what you include in your portfolio. If you do these/go above and beyond, then I'd have to say colleges like Duke, Cornell and Brown would more likely accept you. I'm about 98% sure that Harvard, Yale and Princeton are out of reach, due to your frshman GPA. Stanford still has a possibiliy. Just don't give up and know what you want to do later in life and you'll do good EDIT: didn't notice the SATIIs. Do a math one, cause Chinese is default 800 (80% of people get 800). Or take one for US history always a nice test to take. |
