So I was helping an 8th grade with Math HW

She was doing patterning related to algebra and this one particular question got me stumped for quite a while. For those that are interested, it's below: x l y ----- 1 l 4 2 l 12 3 l 24 4 l 40 5 l 60 6 l 84 Find an equation for this table of values. The answer is y = x(2 + 2x), but the amount of time took to do it was a bit long for grade 8 math. Anyway, my question is, do 8th graders really learn how to do this? I don't ever remember doing this in BC when I was in gr. 8 (4 years ago), as that's a quadratic they're deriving from that table of values (Ontario curriculum btw).
