What is the point of obtaining a PhD?

Should anyone even consider pursuing such a pathway? Is it a waste of 8-11 years? What is the outcome? Discuss.

You can wave it in peoples' faces. Also there's prestige (definitely) and higher pay (I'd assume) associated with it, along with showing you may be more qualified for a job than other applicants.

Pride and Profit, the same exact reason why I'm getting my masters in Biomedical Forensic Science. It would be nearly impossible for me to obtain a career in DNA analysis without one. But if you want to have a office cubicle job making 30k per year? Then by all means do so, but not for me.

How about people with masters degrees, or doctoral degrees in Philosophy/Logic? What are the possible careers that they can choose from?

You get Dr. next to your name, no matter what you studied. But in actuality, since you stayed in university for longer, employers will more likely employ the younger person who did not get a PhD, simply because they came out of university first. First in, first serve?

most PhD's become professors anyway. Job opportunities don't really expand they get smaller from what I've seen.
