If these are hackers, do they realize they are risking jail?

The title refers to the connectivity issues Scania is currently experiencing. I hope it's a simple server glitch or a problem with Nexon's ISP. However, if this truly is a set of script kiddies playing with some way to crash a server/disconnect an entire server (or cluster of servers), I truly hope they realize they are playing with fire here. This would absolutely cross the line into Nexon involving the authorities here. It's one thing to scam people on a video game, that's just rude. But we're talking about crashing the servers or effectively performing a DDOS on a multi-hundred-million-dollar international corporate entity. You know what happens when people try to perform DDOS attacks on major companies like Amazon or whatever? The FBI gets involved, since it's considered a VERY serious infraction of national and international law. There's actually an entire department of the US Justice department (justice.gov / criminal / cybercrime) dedicated to this. And it's not just for major crimes, the 3rd link is some idiot student hacking other computers creating a zombie network, he's looking at possible jail time and forever having a felony record. Man I hope for these kids sake this is just a simple Nexon glitch. I also hope these ever more prominent hackers realize that one day Nexon could throw the book at them if Nexon looses any money because of it.

These darn script kiddies SHALL PAY! EDIT: But yes DDOSing a corporation like that WILL involve the FBI. No exaggeration. Ive heard of people calling the police/FBI for people DDOSing their home computer. I don't think they do much for that level, but for that big, they certainly do.

It's basically a way of making a server or service inaccessible by spamming it with requests. Throwing in the "Distributed" means you're basically using more than 1 computer/location to do it. (Like a zombie network of PCs). I don't think hackers of MS are actually sophisticated enough to really be doing DDOS, but the typical DC hack would be a fairly good example of a DOS type attack.

If nexon actually does something about it, I hope its player induced, to set an example T-T idk 3 channels at a time seems awfully fishy to me.

[/quote] When I was getting my MBA a couple years back, my group had to give a presentation to the rest of the class in our IT management class. The topic I chose was Network Security, and the costs on a corporation. (This was an MBA program, so I couldn't be technical, I had to be all about the bottom-line for us future executives). Anyways, the point is my team had to spend weeks researching the topic, and we found all sorts of interesting information about the costs of hackers and script kiddies on a corporation. We also found out about how seriously the authorities take the matter when they are called in. Ironically, the thing that protects most hackers is that companies are too worried about liability to ever call the authorities. But once the government's called in, they pretty much have little problem tracking the source of the problem. People think they are all safe behind TOR or other script-kiddie tools to hide their identities, but it's amazing what a warrant from the Justice department will do to each ISP in the overall IP trace eventually leading back to the source computer.
