Dad. I love you. I know you�ve never heard me utter those words before, and probably never will. But it�s true. I love you. You�ve always been overly harsh with me. Reprimanding my every move. I was never good enough for you. If I got straight As, you would require that I get all A+s, if I got Bs, you would disown me. Whenever I played soccer, I didn�t score enough goals. Whenever I played basketball, I didn�t score enough points. Whenever I played the saxophone, practiced calligraphy, painted art, did karate; you would always demand that I do more. I hated you for that. I started to detest you whenever you would strike me because I talked back to you or because I didn�t fulfill your expectations as the perfect son. I hated you for your constant verbal and physical abuse. I hated you for your constant put downs. But most of all, I hated myself� I hated the fact that I failed you, time and time again. I hated the fact that I wasn�t a good enough son. I hated the fact that I could never make you happy, never make you smile. I masked my hate under a guise of submission and indifference. �Yes dad.� �Whatever you want dad.� �I�m sorry dad.� �It�s my fault dad.� But in my head, I�ve always played out scenarios of me telling you the truth. Telling you how much I hated you. How much you�ve hurt me over the years. However, I never got the balls to do it� It is after all these years that I realized; you placed all of your hopes, dreams and expectations on me. You wanted me to be more than you could be. You graduated college at the age of 16. You got your PH.d. in biology shortly after, and you attained a lucrative career and became a surgeon. So why then, did you give up everything, and start a new life over in America? I am finally able to answer that question. You did all of that, because you loved me. You loved me with all your heart, and you were willing to leave everything behind, just so I can grow up in the US. You wanted me to live in a better society, a better country. You didn�t want me to have to work as hard as you did. You didn't want me to go through all the hardships you've endured. You wanted me to have a better future, a better life. You wanted me to be everything you couldn�t be. You wanted me to be happy� I know that it's too late now, and we�re at a point where I can never tell you these things face to face. But I just wanted to let you know, even if you�ll never read this message�. That I love you... I love you for everything you�ve done for me. I love you for teaching me how to play soccer, for telling me to kick with my lace and not my toes. I love you for teaching me about animals, for telling me that the biggest animal in the world is the almighty whale. I love you for driving me to all the movies, sleepovers, malls, sporting games and amusement parks. I love you for taking time out of your work to watch me perform my saxophone recital, to awkwardly say �good job� after I was done. I love you for being here. Always watching from th

I feel the same way as you, however I was lucky enough to be able to learn and understand all this at a very young age. Even though my dad has moved back to his country and lives there now, I still call him a lot to tell him I love him and that I miss him a lot sometimes and to check on how he's doing and tell him how life is going for me.
