Why do people think being in a gang is cool?

Why do people think being in a violent, drug-filed, blood shedding gang is a cool? Does it make them better than the rest of society? They act like they're God, and they treat us like we're the little mice on the lion's balls. (This is my area only) Oh and why do people think that just because they smoke makes them cooler than everyone else? I mean, I don't mind them smoking, but it does bother me that they go around, bragging that they know dealers.

Majority of the time people join gangs because they group up fatherless, a loveless environment or poverty struck environment. So where would an individual growing up in said environment find a way out of this. Well through a gang and find security in these people because they have no where else to turn. I'm not saying every case is like this because I know you have that one idiot who basically acts like this "Yo mayne waz gud sun! i'm so supa gansta man. I RuN ThIS StREetz dawg. LoOk MY PaPER!" But Gang life ain't all it's cracked up to be. It is also very short lived. one of three things happens after being in the gang for a while. 1) you die 2) you go to jail 3) you get sick of being a gang member (which is what usually happens with most people) and you do everything you can to peace out or you refer back to 1). OT: From what I've seen, it's not always a case of being cool or what not, many of the gang members that I know joined because of family that is also in that gang. Others, seek protection because they don't have a parental figure or anyone to watch over them.
