Whats Up with Maple Leaves?

I've been looking at all of these maple leaves being sold in FM, and wondering what the deal is. Wouldn't it be worth it to buy them for like1-3k, then get maple shields, etc. from the event? Or are the maple weapons/armors you get from the event like not as good?

You don't get maple weapons from turning in maple leaves, you can only upgrade a weapon you already have.

Well you can't get shields from the NPC by turning in leaves, nor can you get some other maple equips like that. People probably buy the leaves to upgrade the weapons they already got, or to get the Maple equips that are untradable.
