Punishing children by hitting them; agree or disagree?

Do you think it's alright to punish children by hitting them? I'm not talking about leaving bruises or anything with a lot of force, just a slight hit. I do. I think every once in a while a swift smack does the job o.o;

No, it'll just make them scared of you. I'll never hit my kids. Taking away a kid's xbox/computer should do it =P

I do as well. I've seen plenty of kids who've been diciplined with the "new-age", touchy-feely, "time out and think of what you done" crap... and it simply does not work as well.

Hitting them only works if they're younger. By the time theyre a teenager just hitting them won't relally do. You have to take away their favorite hobbies for a while. It works on me XD

I, myself, have never realy being punished by my parents - not even grounded - ever. And I have done a lot of bad things xD I wish my dad would've just slaped me when I was younger, but now it is to late =(

The fact that I can't Spank my Kid is bull. When I was growing up, I got spanked all the time, and I'll tell ya, everytime I got spanked for something, I made sure to never do it again! I look around at kids walking down the roads now, with their pants hanging to their knees, swearing up a storm, hair in their faces or whatever, and Just wish they would have been spanked.

Everything a hit can do, can also be done without that hit by good parents. I would never hit my children, and would make sure my wife wouldn't either. My neighbours kids are being hit all the time when they do even the slightest bit wrong, and I feel sorry for them.

I think hitting kids is good, look at all the softy parents that are oh so politically correct. Really, kids need a smack every now and then as it's the only way to discipline them. Ease off them when they're older though.

I'd never hit them, but I'd guilt trip them into feeling bad. The "I'm ashamed of you" speech always gets me more than any physical hit will ever do.

Of course I'm going to spank my kids. Kids that don't get spanked are the ones who are bratty and get anything they want. Also, this hasn't even been an issue until the last 10 years or so, throughout all of human existence, and every culture, kids are spanked or hit if they behave badly. Not spanking kids is a very liberal and idealist false perception of humanity.

Hitting kids is just a method for parents who don't know to discipline the right way. I was NEVER hit as a kid, neither was my sister. Not hit ONCE and that's no lie. And I never got in trouble in school or anywhere else. No detentions, no suspensions, nothing. And I was always a good student, same as my sister who also has a clean record. Yes, there are parents who hit their kids and the kids turn out ok but they were lucky that they never went too far. Hitting your kids is to teach them that you can control people through force, and if the parent doesn't balance this punishment with moral guidance then the child is gonna have some problems growing up. My parents knew exactly what to say to make us know our places, and there were never threats of violence ever. But unfortunately a lot of parents think that parenting with morals has to be supplemented with physical force. And with all due respect to any parents here, I think you're wrong to hit your kids, and I'm not being politically correct or w/e other ridiculous argument someone wants to throw at me for disagreeing with their methods. I just feel that being a parent is about passing on your values, and if your values include hitting other people to get what you want, then by all means do it.
