| Which would you choose and why? If you want to see my analysis, read on. Otherwise, just post what you think. Here is the way I see it: Doctor: Medical schools have less than 5% acceptance rates, even for the crappiest state schools, and medical school is living hell. When you get out, you are guaranteed to make a six figure salary, usually from 150k-200k. Work hours will be long and it will take many, many years to pay off your school expenses, which by now are almost half a million dollars. You can start a private practice and start stackin the money in the bank, but chances are that that won't happen unless you worked your ass off and got into a top-ranked college than got into a top-ranked medical school. If you don't absolutely live and breathe science, you will hate this job. Ultimately the most prestigious job (other than a millionaire CEO) because everybody knows what hell you went through to become a doctor. Business: There is a high rate for failure, but if you succeed, you can hit the jackpot. If you go to an ivy league college and then go to an ivy league business school, you would have a chance at becoming an investment banker. IBs make around 1 million annually but have no life. There is also the chance that, if you went to top schools, you could start a company and become a CEO, but most business majors are just people in cubicles, trying to climb the corporate ladder and epically failing. If you are not extremely social and a master of communication, you will hate this job. You won't be as prestigious as a doctor or a lawyer unless you are loaded. You should be a beast with numbers if you want to go into finance. Your whole life will be spent in an office, but if you are at the top, you will get to travel frequently. Lawyer: Very high rate of failure. Chances are very high that you will end up with a 60k salary. If you get into an ivy or similar top-ranked school and then go to a top-ranked law school, you will have a high chance for success, but we all know that that is impossible for almost everyone (about 90% of people that apply to be exact). If you suck at arguing, you will never succeed in this field. Engineer: Unless you go to a top-ranked engineering school, chances are that you will have great difficulty finding a job and, when you do, you will be making maybe 50k a year. Engineering salaries typically cap at 150k after being in the work-force your whole life, so this job is really only for those who are masters of mathematics and physics. If you love technology, that does not mean you will like engineering. Engineering is about sitting in a cubicle in front of a computer all day long and making 3D models, it is not as hands-on as you think it is, and it is all about math. They say that an engineer can become a CEO of a company, but that would not happen much as an engineer would only become an engineer if they love engineering. You will be classified as a nerd and you won't have as much prestige as a doctor or a lawyer. |

| Medical school takes too long, it's too boring. Business is even more boring. Everyone hates lawyers. What's left? And engineering is very hands-on. When you get out of work, you can make all kinds of stuff and fix your friends' stuff. |

But on the job, you will spend most if not all of your time in front of a computer screen. If it was more about the technology, I would want to be an engineer. But it is actually all about solving problems using mathematics and physics. It doesn't sound as fun as building electronics. |

Edit; wait, did you pull these stats out of your ass?
There is a common misconception that all lawyers make big money. The truth is that most lawyers graduate without jobs and don't find good jobs for a while. Then, when they do find a job, it pays maybe 50-60k. Most lawyers do not get paid big money. The way to get paid big as a lawyer is to work your ass off in high school and get into a top-ranked university (Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Stanford, MIT, Duke, Cornell, Brown, Columbia, etc.) do extremely well and then get accepted into a law school of a similar caliber. Then, be at the top of your class in that law school and you will get recruited by some big-money law firms. It takes a lot of hard work to make big money as a lawyer. As you can see, the difference between making a lot as a lawyer and as a doctor is that as a doctor, you obligatorily have to do all the hard work. As a lawyer, you have to push yourself to end up with the same salary. As a lawyer, nobody is keeping you from being a failure, whereas as a doctor, you can't be a failure or you will kill someone. Nevertheless, when it comes to top residencies, being a doctor gets competitive as well. |
The salary is not amazing for all doctors. Believe it or not, ask any doctor and they will tell you that they are underpaid. Back in the day, doctors made millions. The trend shows that salaries for doctors are going down, and, when compared to top jobs in law and business, those jobs clearly make more than doctors. The reason for this is that doctors are in school for substantially longer than those other fields, and by the time they are getting giant paychecks, doctors are just starting to pay off their extremely large education costs. If somebody wanted to become a doctor for the money, they wouldn't make it out of medical school. They would rather do well as someone in finance, if they go to a top college. Also, there are doctors with insecure jobs. Most will probably not retire early. |
