Hey basil, I'm excited about building my own computer this year and i thought i would share the current specs I'm looking at to see what you all think Main Hardware Processor: Intel� Core� i3-540 Processor (4M Cache, 3.06 GHz) Dual Core Graphics Card: 1G GIGABYTE 9800GT 3GIGs of DDR2 RAM (Total) Motherboard - Currently unknown. Probably going to go for a cheap motherboard. Hard Drive: 500Gb 22� High Definition LCD Screen Other Hardware Generic Wireless Card : Random card i'll pick up from a local store. Dual Layer DVD burner Speakers Casing Is there anything else i should consider? Should i reconsider any of these parts? Additional Information What i'll use it for: I plan to use this computer in my room for gaming, browsing the web and other random activities. I don't plan to run anything hard core like Photoshop or After effects. I'm a casual gamer and not completely serious, as of now my current PC and the only PC i've ever had cant even support Pixel shader 2.0. The reason i chose superbilling as the store to buy all my supplies from is that they are local, trustworthy and cheap. I am obtaining the graphics card for free from a friend, so that wont change. And the LCD screen is NOT included in my budget, i will have that before the rest of my computer, I'm looking at a budget of around $600. So far all my estimates for this exact computer at the prices now is around $550.

I suggest you learn a bit more about hardware in general before attempting this. That site has horrendous prices. Use newegg, its alot cheaper. Your ram wont work with that processor. Youll want a 2x2GB set. You need a PSU and a motherboard. You also need an operating system.

I agree with above poster. Those prices are really bad. Also if you're only a casual gamer and not planning to play any high-spec requirement games, then you can drop the graphics card and use an IGP. You could just buy a normal pre-built system, considering you're not going to be building anything high-end. Typically, it's only "worth it" building your own system when you're spending $750+ish.

I tend not to skimp on the motherboard :P And how about going for an Athlon II X4 instead? It costs $100 and I've not really read anything negative about it so far; great for casual use http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103704

intel proccessors are way ahead in terms of performance right now, the best motherboards are asus, as the first poster said 2x2gb is beter then 3bg and usualy sell in pairs like that ( i recomend buying ocz, corsair or kingston ) make sure you dont buy the cheapest case, casing is very important . make sure you have good airflow ( nvidia cards tend to get hot so good airflow helps ) NCIX as very good prices and support ( ships to Canada and the US )

I agree with yuyulian that jdmac's comment is very opinionated.. anyways, the reason that 3 GB of RAM wouldn't work is because the i3 processor utilizes dual channel, so you should buy the RAM in pairs (2x1 GB, 2x2GB, etc). And personally I'd try to settle on a decent motherboard first, so that I can work out the other parts around it (otherwise you have to narrow down motherboard selection based on what speed your RAM can operate at, number of expansion slots you need, processor socket etc. That's just me however, but you do need a motherboard selected to give us a better idea on how the system as a whole looks.

I used a random generic ram for the picture for the hell of it, I'll get the right ram. I have Windows 7 thats already covered. The PSU comes with the casing. I'm getting a motherboard that matches the processor and supports the ram i need The graphics card I'm getting for FREE from a friend. Also, A friend is helping me build it and i'm doing a VET IT Course so im learning, Thats the whole point of this.

I suggest you take the IT course and then go to build a system. Also, when you make a thread like this, it would behoove you to post all and only relevant information. If youre using a link for "generic ram" that will screw up prices. How are we supposed to know you have an OS if you dont tell us? I hope your friend didnt help you with anything in that first link, other than the GPU, because if he did, then he should be in that class with you.
