Hello basil, does anyone have any good ideas to sci-fi/fantasy story about? This is for a Year 12 creative writing assessment in New Zealand btw Some ideas I've thought of are: something to do with psychics (like the maple comic Inner Cogitation) or someone that wants to escape from some kind of utopia.

Year 12 is easy man, achieved is a breeze. If you want to get top marks though, show something with originality, character development, and a deeper message than what is shown on the top layer. Pick a life-changing experience you've had and find a way to turn it into your story. Use your own real emotions, divided thoughts and beliefs and create characters with them. I did that as a year 11 and scored excellence at NCEA level 3 level.

Why would someone want to escape from an ideal world? Do you mean dystopia? That sounds like a good idea, although it would be challenging to create a society like that, unless you just keep it really vague.

I was going to do a story based on something I heard on basil which is : if you are indoors during an earthquake, you have a better chance of surviving by being in a fetal position next to something like a desk rather than going under a desk which is what you are told to do by schools. This kind of has a message about how we just do as we're told. Unfortunately, our story has to have some kind of sci-fi/fantasy theme so I have to think how to incorporate this story in that theme.

Holy crap... I live in New Zealand too, I'm the same year group as you, and we're doing those same topics for an AS language piece. What school do you go to? I go to ACG Parnell in the city. I haven't decided what I'm doing mine on though... :/

Ooh, I go to Pakuranga College which is in East Auckland @ctrlplusz I actually did mean utopia but it was my fault for not explaning it more clearly. I was meaning how a guy wants to escape from a community which the government tells everyone is utopia. Don't know if this makes sense but I'm probably not going to use this idea anyway.
