|
Jinxiy : I believe there is some truth to every stereotype.
Yeah like how all americans are fat. The truth here is that some are. Now if i started a stereotype that all Americans eat people would it be true? i mean, the truth is, some of them do so it's just as true as all Americans being fat right? |
That wouldn't be a stereotype. That would be a rumor. Stereotypes happen when a selective number of people in certain groups are observed by an outside source as doing something specific(looking or speaking a certain way, ect..). You can't just "start a stereotype." Not all Americans are fat, but the stereotype is truthful because there are many Americans who have a weight issue. That is the truth. |

You can't just "start a stereotype." Not all Americans are fat, but the stereotype is truthful because there are many Americans who have a weight issue. That is the truth.
You clearly dont understand the propagation and progression of a stereotype. Especially the all American's being fat one. The short version: They do get started. The longer version which i will just touch on the details of. America as a result of being a very looks/health/fitness/longevity oriented and aware nation has pretty rigid and specific standards for what is and is not obese(overweight). As a result lots of polls, surveys, studies etc. are done regarding obesity, its effects, its scope and its scale. These studies, polls, etc... invariably find that Americans are commonly overweight. Many of them are very specific about by how much, the causes, the effects, and what this means. The general conclusion and consensus of these studies is that americans are overweight. This naturally makes it to the American news media as we are once again a culture that is very looks/health/fitness/longevity oriented, this is only natural. Like most things on the news, the problem is generalized, summarized, and overblown, because honestly, its easier to report and it sells. Now, we are approaching the part where this becomes a stereotype. America has the strongest global media presence on the planet, hands down. News media in particular. Now when all these other countries (eastern europeans are particularly fond of this stereotype) and their various media see this, they naturally repeat it. Only it is not just in news media (where it is naturally exaggurated, summrized, and overblown, because that's what sells) it's also in comedy news programs, referrenced in all sorts of shows, and what have you. The result is the general buildup, exaggeration, and repition of that ALL Americans are fat. not just a little fat, like you and me, but SUPER SUPER FAT. They eat 8 meals a day and 7 of them are MACdonalds, the other is burger king. Given, this is a little rediculous but it is in the way it's presented. And true to the word of many a successful propagandist, a lie repeated often enough becomes the truth. People take seriously what was at first even in their own media somewhat of a joke made tongue in cheek and exaggerated for comedy. But it is reinforced by its presence in ours and their serious media, giving the issue weight. The thing that they fail to understand is the source. Our country isnt much fatter than many of the eastern european countries, we are just more aware, more strict, more rigid in our standards. I told you it was the long version. Also i didn't proofread, so deal with the typos you grammar nazi's. |

|
DitSomeboy : Yes! That is exactly what I'm trying to say. Stereotypes can be offensive but they are partly true and keeps everything going. Americans rely on the Chinese for products and the Chinese rely on the Americans for produts. Something like that.
No, thats complete bullcrap. The Chinese would still produce goods regardless of whether or not we believed they were bad drivers. TS is obviously never subject to common stereotyping. |
