Is religion the opiate of the masses? Discuss.

like a lot of things in life, no, not really. Religion is just there to give an option on how to view the world. it's the extremists that ruin things. Rather than take religion out of the equation, like a thread talking about something similar to the OP showed, it's taking things in moderation that's a better "What if" than taking out religion

Whether it be extremist Islamists, right-wing fundamentalist christians who murder abortion doctors due to the "sanctity of life" or the extremist far-right jews in Israel doing their best to sabotage a middle east peace deal. The problem are extremists.

Since reality is subjective to an individual, it is the opiate of the masses to us, while in their realities, they are 'happy'.

A significant minority of the followers of religion are extremist in their views and sometimes the extremists have been accused of brainwashing their supporters which to a certain extent follows the theme.

Yes, as it is a mean to control people by inserting unestablished fears of punishments. It has its upsides, like educating towards morality, but I hardly see anyone giving a crap about this nowadays.
