Should athletes have a certain GPA to be able to play a sport? Why or why not?

Yeah, you don't want student athletes to focus so much on sports that their grades go down. o-o most probably won't become professionals (if they even wanted to be) so they'll need something else to fall back on.

Schools get money based on academics, not athletics. so yes.

Well even though I do agree, I can see someone trying to argue that people don't need the academic knowledge in order to play sports.

They already implement that system. Although it's only a 2.0 for my school. You fail classes->get bad STAR/other standardized scores->school gets lower scores->housing markets near school drops->sad community.

Well to play varsity basketball i need a minimum average unweighted GPA of 2.5. Its so low that it relatively doesn't matter.

Yes I believe they should do it and raise the standards too because if you raise the standards and force them to work for sports it'll better them in the future for college/scholarships and such. Correct me if I'm wrong most schools in the US require you to have a 2.0 to play sports.

Almost all schools require you to keep your grades up to play. Academics come first, period.

Most athletes do not make it to the big leagues, so if they dont make it, they are dead if they dont have at least some knowledge.

The school education system and scores are more important than an afterschool activity. The purpose of school is to learn. They want someone who can maintain their GPA while they play sports. Not just someone who can just breeze by high school with just their physical talents.
