Is it possible to get hacked without giving your info out, and without downloading anything?

LOL idk but my brother, who always played maplestory on his own pc, got hacked BUT... he was hacked 2 years after he quit maple... i saw he connected and he doesn't have maplestory on his pc... so... idk o.O (he never gave out any info, he dont even got registered on forums or went into suspicious pages related to hack programs... so... LOL o.O... he don't even had friends on BL LOL)
