My friend showed me his "proof" that 1 = 2. I know it's wrong but he wont believe me -_- Help? 1 = x x^2 = 1 So x = x^2 x - 1 = x^2 - 1 Quadratic x - 1 = ( x - 1)( x +1) Cancel x -1 1 = x + 1 x=1 1 = 1 + 1 1 = 2

i hate young buck math kids who try to re-invent the wheel. if 1 = 2 then his first equation is laugh-in-his-face wrong. edit to make myself more clear: you can't use 1 with a value of 1 if you're trying to prove the value of 1 = 2. that's utterly moronic.

I know there's something wrong with this, I just can't find it :/ @OnePower: No, because even if it was 0 divided by 0, it would still be undefined, seeing as how it was divided by 0, and not 1. Sounds like your friend is just trying to be a smartass.

The moment he said 1 = x, you would have to substitute 1 for x. (1)^2 = 1 1 = 1. You're friend is a dumbass. 1 = x is the same as x = 1.

We even had this as a question of a day in algebra. Our teacher asked us to tell us why this proof is wrong. It's because x-1=0 And dividing by 0 = a big no no

0/0 is undefined, since it equates to how many zeroes would satisfy an answer of zero. Since there are an infinite number of possibilities, 0/0 would not equal to one.

But from how I was taught, you'd divide both sides by (x - 1) and end up with 1 = (x + 1), but since x = 1, dividing by (x - 1) equates to dividing by 0. Just want a clarification on that!
