In the United States, everyone is split into groups, "Asian Americans, African-Americans, Americans, etc." In the UK, everyone is referred to as "British," no matter what ethnic background they are.

People always ask me 'where you are from' or 'what race are you.' Sometimes I respond with "American" just to make a point. You would think that after 234 years of Independence people would be able to call themselves after their country instead of getting a weird look (although, 'American' could be classified under many countries technically, but everyone would know what you mean).

i think they still call themselves americans, they just use the race prefix to denote ethnicity uh.. i think. i wouldn't know, i'm not american.

Lol ? If someone asks me what race I am I answer Viet. No need to say "Norwegian" when we live in Norway, duuh When I'm on Maple or on vaccation etc. I also answer Viet, but I also add that I live in Norway.
