so i posted one of my drawings yesterday hoping for some advice/comments. one of the comments that really popped out at me was "your drawing is flat". i was liek huh? but then i looked at my drawing and noticed it. theres no "3D" and he looks like a flat cardboard. please note i'm only a beginner. here is the drawing itself hi if you could explain how to make my drawings less "flat" that'd be really nice.

shade he sides of the face and hair, as well as shirt. blend the shirt in more, but at a lighter color. the color now is too dark so it'll be hard to put contrast into it. make sure the center is extremely light and the sides are dark when shading the face and hair. edit: also shade in the neck, dark to light.

shading huh? i guess its time to start shading. i actually wanted to get the features first (hair, eyes, etc) before i went on to shading @averby i don't want to waste printer paper cuz my drawings aren't good enough yet. plus i have a bunch of wide ruled paper that i can't use for school

the main thing is "attention to detail" for drawing, ah i'm not too good atm myself(some of my pictures in my profil3), but ah even without shading, if say you added cheek lines or maybe like a fold in the jaw line area or idk, just defining line, adds that much more depth here n there. I find shading to be a painful process sometimes. Kinda like drawing oval.. if u leave it like that it could be an egg.. but if you add slanted lines to a center thick line, even withotu shading it couldu be a "generic leaf" hahaha.

Do you know basic human anatomy? My artist friend learned this first, and she's really good now. Anime characters have really skewed faces/bodies, maybe it's better to draw normal people first.
