Just started reading part 1 for school. I have a feeling I won't like it, just because it chronicles a >white< tomboy growing up in the 30's and her issues with racism. I know I'm going to regret the next 3 hours of my life.

Seriously. Character and plot development is so weak in this novel, it's not even really worth reading. Just skip to the trial, and read it from there.

[/quote] It's a wonder why so many people put it on a high pedestal. Maybe it's because it presents a character that's learning about racism and stuff, take that out, and you got a mediocre book.

[/quote] Like any kid who's reading it hasn't already studied that theme a million times already. They should cut it from the curriculum and replace it with something that's actually worth reading.

[/quote] It's more of a coma/sleeping type thing than pain. @above: yes, Scout is white. It's just that she doesn't understand why people hate black people.

[/quote] Yep, unless you're a masochist that likes filler or something weird like that... @yPOS1:They never present any modern intellectual books into the curriculum, funny huh? I guess they're trying to teach us the wrongs of what they did back then, but we're not them. In other news: The only really interesting part I found out of the whole book was the part that Scout was a piece of ham, that gave me a little chuckle.

Scifi/Fantasy is more of my type. <: edit: Scout, ham, wut? Who sings Kids of the Future besides the Jonas Brothers?
