I like spears for many reasons, they look cool, they are relatively cheap, there scrolls are cheap as well and they are quite unique. I also really like final attack, so i don't really want to be a hybrid DK. My question is: Is it really going to lower my damage alot if i choose to become a Pure Spear Dark Knight?

Being Hybrid gives you the choice of BOTH Pole arm and Spear, so I really don't see why you would choose Pure Spear over Hybrid. If you choose to become Pure, however, your overall damage dealt to monsters overtime will be less because of the Slash/Stab ratio being 3:2, but this only applies during 2nd job. During 3rd job, if you are pure then nothing will be affected but your training will be significantly slower as using Crusher will lose to PA Fury, as mobs come in larger quantities so Pole arm would be much more sufficient. Also Final Attack may seem fun (if you are new to spearman) but in reality, it's really useless and gets in the way during 2nd job. In conclusion, go Hybrid no matter what your feeling because Hybrid is always right.

Alright, but doesn't going hybrid mean i need to get 2 weapons every time i need to upgrade my weapon after level 70. And does it matter which I use during second job if im taking a hybrid build? EDIT: Also, after looking at the skills, crusher doesnt seem THAT much worse than fury. Crusher does 490% damage in all to 3 monsters and fury does 250% damage to 6 monsters. So on average crusher would be hitting 245% to 6 monsters. 5% Difference doesnt seem like much to me. Or is there a speed difference as well?

It allows you to use both Pole Arm and spear but you don't necessarily need a spear until 4th job. From levels 30-130 its mainly Pole Arm, the reason being is because during 2nd job, you will slash more than you stab and Pole Arm is meant for slashing, so its pretty obvious a Pole Arm would be better then. 3rd job, Pole Arm is still better to use because what I said previously, monsters will be in larger mobs so PA fury (hits six and is faster) will kill faster than using a Spear with Crusher (hits 3, 3 times but is slower), The Only Exception (lols) is bossing. So basically, if you want faster training which im sure everyone does, then Pole Arm is the way to go from levels 30-130, then Spear will dominate after those levels. Note, im not saying you HAVE to use Pole Arm during those levels, but its mostly prefered.

You seem to have alot of facts, and i really value your oppinion but... I think im still gonna stick with spears, and if i end up hatin' myself for it, then i guess I should have listened to you, hahah. But i don't see that happenin any time soon.

Nooo, your making a big mistake. Before you make your decision, take a look at the thread called "Come in PR0 Dk/Drk/Spearmen " , listen to what most Drk's have to say (Hybrid). But, ok if Pure is the road you will take then, im not here to force you into a decision, just here to give advice on the right decision. And also remember being Hybrid is like being Pure Spear and Pure Pole Arm at the same time, without losing any 'Good' skills.

JigglyjelloPole arms will train quite a bit faster. Fury is a much better skill in 3rd job training, and polearms with the slash stab ratio are very nice (i went spear first with my hybrid build, which was quite hellish until i switched to polearms x.x") But if you like spears then go ahead xD

Trust me. My Dark Knight is pure spear, and I was a stubborn nub in my 2nd job and decided that hybrid is nub. Well, its not. I would definitely make another DK just for the hybrid part..when I'm in the mood that is.

Feel free to go pure spear if you want...Long as you know you will spend more money per level, and take up to ~30% more time per level. Why not have the greatness of basically being a Pure Spear and a Pure PA at the same time? And no, you don't have to buy two weapons. You don't even have to ever touch a PA if you don't want too. But it gives you options. Besides that, who knows what kind of maps we well get in the future? We may get 4th job training maps where PA is teh awesome sauce. You would regret not being hybrid then. (but you would regret not going hybrid either way, so not a big difference there.)

wenbodoui don't understand what could possibly be so appealing about final attack, where is single target damage more important than mobbing? noooowhere... cool that you like spears but lol i'm going to say polearms get through 30-13x (when spears take over) in ... half the time. :D maybe some slight exaggeration, but the more i think about it...:P

I think im still gonna stick with spears, and if i end up hatin' myself for it, then i guess I should have listened to you, hahah. But i don't see that happenin any time soon. [/quote] FINAL ATTACK IS A TRAP. Here's an example; Slash Blast does 130% damage. On my WK (slash blast works the same across all jobs, so this will be perfectly valid), I can hit 5k+ pretty easily with slash blast, sometimes up to 7k. ANd yet when I'm slash blasting large mobs, I sometimes see literally 59 damage, because Final Attack doesn't distribute its 250% damage evenly across the mob. This gap is even wider with Spearmen, because of our higher max/lower min. The way the damage is distrubuted means that Final Attack SLOWS DOWN your mobbing, by doing almost no damage to more than half the mob, while wasting time with the final attack animation. So, skip it. That's 30 points saved, that would have only hurt you. If you drop 19 into polearm mastery and 11 into polearm booster, oh look. You're hybrid. And in third job, as noted, there's a WIDE gap in training speeds between polearm users/hybrids and pure spears. As a pure spear, you WILL : A) Take longer to level B) Not really come into your Dragon Knighthood until level 74-75, when Crusher becomes worthwhile; Hybrids are using Fury from level 71 C) Waste more money in potions D) Be unable to make proper use of all our big mob maps E) End up wasting SP in third job, too, because you run out of good skills to get If you really wanted to, you could go with a hybrid build, and only ever use spears; The point is to not hurt yourself by getting crappy moves like Final Attack and Dragon's Blood (replaceable with NLC warrior elixirs, which are superior in just about every way). But if you're worried about having to buy two weapons all the time through third job... don't. The only polearm you ever really need is a Maple Karstan filled with 100% scrolls, which will carry you from 64/70 (depending when you want to start using polearms) through to 13x when you start going to skeles. You can try for something stronger, of course, but you don't really need to. So you drop a couple mill into a crappy karstan, and your training speed will end up MUCH faster. Why was it you wanted to go pure spear again?
