Hey all! This thread is not a literal interpretation of the title, but more..."philosophical" you may want to say. If you don't like this, don't read. However, I want to see reactions to this. And thus I start: "What is MapleStory?" No, I do not mean to answer this with the words "2D", "side-scrolling", or "RPG" anywhere in the definition. What I mean is what does it mean to YOU personally and how it affected your life. For me...well, from years of being addicted, quitting, coming back and repeating the cycle four times over I can tell you it was one way I survived High School. I never really participated much with the crowd in real life (I'm even still struggling with that), but online I could be free to be me...or any other personality I felt should show. I kept up with friends; gained them, lost them, and kept in contact with some more, but it still seemed to be my life during those troublesome years. Entering college I kept up with it, but was slowly realizing that I was outgrowing it, so I quit. "For good" this time.... I'm back now, unable to resist my younger years pulling on me. I have no friends left, really, who play (perhaps one if she comes back) which is one reason I'm writing this. I'm kind of depressed. Life isn't that grand, and I'm coming to the terms that life is no video game that I've been submerged into to escape it. And when I play (or at least try to) I realize this and thus get saddened. I've made nothing of myself, and I have one little, level 84 character to show for my years of play. It's kind of sad if you think about it. MapleStory to me is photograph in that old frame that you can't stand to look at...but it's the only way to remember. Damn, I'm getting even more depressed. Writing is something that always helped me, but this isn't. To wrap this up, I just want to say: I love MapleStory. For it's ups and downs. For it's hackers verses legit player wars. For all it's glitches, I still played it. For all those who were annoyed by Nexon and ranted...we still play it (mostly). Once you realize what the game really is, most will (or want to) quit. But for what the game really is to me...is a life. Not a boring, pointless game, but a place to experience and make friends. Laugh if you want. Agree maybe. It won't change for me, but how about you? So...What is MapleStory?

Most people fail to realize that this is a game that interacts with other PEOPLE. They think it's a little world surrounded by them and only them. So they're free to do whatever the heck they think is okay(I've met plenty who thought this way). I honestly think it's gross, but it's a way to escape their somewhat "harsh" lives. MS to me is just a grinding game. Kill monsters. More monsters. And more. There's no particular story line.. at all in this game, and thus boring to me. I've met some great people, lost few friends, and encountered the lamest drama ever. I think it's an OKAY of a game. Yay.

For me, it's the only way for me to interact with people for now (I have to be homeschooled). MapleStory can actually teach you a few life lessons (How to save/make money, learn who to trust, etc.) Also, when you level with your character, it gives you a sense of accomplishment (which can help self esteem).

The whole clue is that you can be who you want to be. You can make your character look like you want it to look like, and you talk and respond way more easy. This makes it easier that life, and that's pretty dangerous. Some people make this their lives and forget about the rest. I think Maple is fun, but I try to keep it a game, not a way of life. I like the easy interaction with people, talking to them and having fun, but it DOENST compare to the things in real life. Games are there to enjoy they, so lets enjoy Maple, but make sure to have other sources of fun, and focus on real life, because we won't finish school with level 30 Savage Blow.

Awesome responses guys! Glad they're well thought out too! Ponykthx: Same! I was kind of worried when I made this thread.... Yannick: Very, very true...and something I need help on. If it's not Maple, it's yugioh or youtube. I think I see games as a way of escape rather than just fun, unfortunately.

Maplestory is my escape from realism. If I'm having a bad day or just want to kick back and hang out with people I'll log onto Maplestory. I've got many friends on here and we'll talk, hang out, train together. It's really helpful. I failed in school and I was never one for sticking out in a crowd ( I never really talk that much as it is ) so typing always helped me. I don't express myself alot and people on Maplestory don't really care to question you alot and if you get judged it's just whatever.

To me maplestory is alot like life yet a lot like a fantasy maplestory is fun to play a great way to escape mean teachers or piles of homework or just the daily stress but do not get to sucked into it i hate talking to people in real life because when i ask a question i feel almost stupid if its got an obvious answer with maplestory i can ask a completely retarded question and they either give me an answer or say N00BZ0RL0LZ and either way i don't care but when i say it is like life i mean to the point where when you level its like getting an A+ on a quiz when you get money you have to earn some way or another think about it meso bags -(i don't know about you but i work for my money then spend maybe about 10$ on nexon every 3 months) but i still feel that accomplishment i've met friends lost some friends the whole maple ordeal and in the end even though all the gms do is stick there thumb up there butt and stand there and even though the hackers and scammers and glitchers and and the noobs in my opinion overall it gets a 10/10 in my book

Well at least this thread didn't devolve into "WHAT IS MAPLESTORY?" spam. Personally, MapleStory is an escape from my crappy life that I can't keep up with. I'm too unfamiliar with success IRL, it doesn't happen to me in any quantity that makes any difference, even getting out of bed in the morning and arriving to the first morning lecture of the day is a "success" to me; it's pathetic. Whenever I run into an issue on some homework or something, it gets to me pretty hard because I hate being this recurring failure who can't do anything right, so what do I do? Log on Maple. It's hard to fail on Maple. Successes in-game make me feel accomplished and satisfied because I actually managed to achieve them and i have the potential to excel in them, unlike in IRL where I run up into issue upon issue upon issue just to achieve what is expected of me. From that, Maple to me is extreme escapism because I don't want to face the consequences of my actions IRL until I have no choice. I am the very definition of an addict. Maple has trashed and compromised my life in so many ways (I let it due to lack of willpower), and yet I can't let go, dissociate myself from it, treat it as what it is: a game not a lifestyle. tldr; loser no-life lolol get a life pathetic i look down on your inferior life and it feels good man i get laid what about you am i cool yet
